Gucci Resort 2008 Collection: Fierce, Focused, and Fun

I love rooting for Gucci, my mother's all-time favorite designer, each and every season in the hopes the Italian design powerhouse will outshine all other designers with brilliant clothing and to-die-for shoes and handbags. Lately, though, I've been a bit underwhelmed by Frida Giannini's endeavors. I never make it inside the Gucci boutiques anymore because, frankly, I'm tired of seeing throngs of signature Gucci-print clad bags. Enough already. Give me what I want, Gucci - fierce, absolute must-have handbags. With their Resort 2008 Collection, Gucci stifles my calls for bold, beautiful fashion.

Resort collections are, for the most part, ignored by the vast majority of fashion designers. So it was with this fact in mind that I was surprised to see such a focused, cohesive collection from a designer label that's iconic enough to just get by. A black and white color palette (a somewhat odd choice for summer apparel) serves as a mod backdrop for strategically placed splashes of red and varying shades of green as the geometric-pattern theme pushes the envelope in a tasteful, fashion-conscious manner. The pieces sport classic silhouettes with a fun, modern twist and one can't help but stare at the strange way in which all this separate madness comes so well together. Genius!

The bags are typical resort collections bags - totes and carryalls. Shiny leather-clad weekender bags with bamboo top handles are a conservative foil for Gucci's collection, while the celebrity-favorite Indy Bag is recycled in fun patterns. Though not in-your-face fierce, the Gucci 2008 Resort Collection is still striking and well-designed. My pleas have been answered, and my mom would be proud.
