3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2008 Collection: Colorful Simplicity

The 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring '08 collection gave the appearance of being thrown together at the last minute - and that's a good thing! The fresh, simple and colorful looks seemed perfectly suited for travel. A roomy top and relaxed capri pants capped off with a trench coat set the tone for Lim's best collection yet. His wearable pieces were surprisingly sensual and the evening-wear will definitely be seen on Hollywood starlets or wealthy socialites come spring. His design evolution is happening at a meteoric pace, but his accessories, with handbags in particular, have made the most note-worthy growth.

A fabulous color palette set the stage for a healthy group of practical and well-designed bags. Large totes, ideal for weekend getaways, as well as bright hobos and clutches were peppered into the collection lending it a true sense of cohesion. My favorites, a black satchel with camel handles and a large camel tote with red, yellow and black stripes adorning the exterior, pointed in the direction of significant re-alignment in basic handbag colors. In spite of his daring yet sophisticated design philosophy being responsible for designs that appeal to a younger clientèle, Lim's handbags, especially the large travel-ready carryalls, will sell very well and potentially attract older, more discerning customers who are always in search of style without sacrificing function or comfort.
