Valentino Spring 2008 Collection: Fabulous Farewell

Valentino, why must you retire? Please stay, I beg of you. Your namesake label is nothing without you. You are the last of the great fashion design icons in the great tradition of Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. If you must leave, though, please know that I, for one, will miss you terribly. The fashion world will never be the same without you. Arrivederci, Valentino.Valentino Garavani's final ready-to-wear collection for the label bearing his name and indelible fashion imprint was nothing short of spectacular. This Spring 2008 collection was a tribute to his love of fashion and a woman's body. It was fitting that the colorful and feminine designs of Valentino's heyday served as inspiration for his farewell collection.80s silhouettes and classic "Valentino" details dominated the runway. The color palette of candy pastels, creams, black and white was peppered with Garavani's signature use of red. Bows were everywhere from dresses to jackets to evening gowns. Strappy footwear perfect for spring and summer only enhanced Valentino's joyful retreat. Yet nothing in this fabulous collection spoke more to Valentino's famous feminine fashions than the plethora of handbags.New renditions of his successful Histoire, Drape, Nuage Bow, Rosette and Maison bags were colorful and perfect. The Bow Clutch carried by practically every celebrity this past year made its' mark yet again. The many styles featured, including a new design with braided handles and weaving detail, will continue to serve as a reminder to all who end up owning one that they possess a small slice of fashion heaven and a design as timeless as the man who helped create it.Photos via Elle.com
