3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2009 Collection: All Grown Up

The 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2009 Collection makes one heck of a statement about its' creator, Phillip Lim - "I'm all grown up and you should be too". Known for his simple, youthful designs, Lim demonstrates a progression from freshman designer to full-fledged artist. From sleek silhouettes to flirty designs to a varied use of materials, this collection looks and feels like those of his more seasoned peers.

The details set these sophisticated designs apart from the rest of the collections we've seen during NY Fashion Week. Ruffles (with matching shoes), embroidered appliqués, even bolero jackets are just a few examples of Lim's more inspired detailing choices. You know this designer is ready to sling it around with the big guns when he throws in a sequined vest into the mix and makes it one of the more exquisite pieces to boot.

The handbags are typical and predictable. Totes, satchels and clutches done in much the same way as past seasons. No surprises here except for the use of a polka-dot pattern throughout. I can't say any of these bags are must-haves, but they certainly aren't the worst I've seen (or will see as more collections are previewed). Phillip Lim may be "all grown up", but there is still plenty of room for improvement.
