BCBG Spring 2009 Collection: Tomboy Chic

I never had any tomboy friends growing up. We were all pretty "girlie" and proud of it. That didn't mean we were averse to playing dodge ball with the guys or climbing a tree or two. It just meant we'd rather play dress up with our mothers clothes, but if the tomboys I knew of growing up had dressed up like this, we would have been best friends for certain. BCBG MaxAzria's Spring 2009 Collection can be summed up as being "tomboy chic". The collection is mostly comprised of t-shirt dresses, rompers and jumpsuits. While I'd never be caught dead in any of the aforementioned silhouettes, I admit I'm drawn to the way silks and jerseys are combined to produce the tomboyish effect with total success.

Subtle neutrals with splashes of purple, teal and orange make up this collections color palette. It's the reason why the slightly unusual jumpsuits, rompers and dresses work - the well chosen hues keep the collection fresh and chic. Overall, it's a fun and modern Spring collection, but what about the handbags? Well, that's another story entirely.

Here's what's good about them: the elegant color palette which compliments the collection beautifully.

Here's what's not so good about them: the 'tomboyish' bags.

The very theme that makes the clothes work doesn't translate as well to handbags. Most of the bags are flat clutches that are impractical and boring. There are a couple of shoulder bags/clutches that are quite lovely, and the use of color and exotic-effect leathers make them worthy of praise. The over-sized clutch (this trend isn't going away, ladies) with a zippered main compartment and attached outer coin purse is a particular standout. Watch for that one come spring.

My favorite part of the collection - the shoes. Divine, divine, divine! (Too bad I have weak ankles :-( ) Back to the bags, though. Other than the over-sized clutch, the BCBG bags are a bit of a letdown. There were no satchels, totes or hobos to speak of. Why? Even a tomboy needs a chic handbag.
