Marc Jacobs Spring 2009 Collection: Inspired Clothing, Boring Bags

Did I give my entire post away with the title? I just didn't feel like being clever when writing about Marc Jacobs. After his disasterous spring collection for the MARC by Marc Jacobs line, I was prepared for more of the same with his namesake RTW collection. Only I didn't see more of the same. What I saw was an inspired collection where details made all the difference. As a full-figured woman, I have to be selective with the clothes I buy. Marc Jacobs' Spring 2009 Collection demonstrates how a high-end designer can create clothing that will look good on a variety of body types.

Let's examine his more inspired design choices. MJ serves up his collection with a rather dark color palette where prints and embroidery are heavily emphasized. High, cinched waists are everywhere - from belted jackets to skirts and cropped pants - all are done to emphasize a woman's shape. Any woman's shape to be exact. As with all of Jacobs' collections, the trick is to take a look, deconstruct it and extract the pieces that'll work for you.

For as much as I'm thrilled with the direction Jacobs' RTW line is taking, unfortunately, I can't say the same for his handbags. In fact, I hate the direction his handbag line has taken over the past few seasons. This latest endeavor is, by far, the worst offender. Chunky-chained, quilted shoulder bags clad in a hodge-podge of colors and skins and featuring tassels galore are pretty awful. When you add the animal prints and funky color combinations, you're left wondering if Jacobs was spent after channeling his artistic energy into the clothing and came up with these bags as an afterthought. Anyhow, inspired clothing, boring bags.
