Bottega Veneta Fall 2009 Handbag Collection: Schooling Others On Handbag Design

A Tomas Maier design oozes timeless sophistication from every stitch, button and zipper he so deftly puts in place. Under his artistic guidance, Bottega Veneta has risen to the highest echelons of the fashion world. Maier, BV's creative director, has wisely understood that it's the label's leather goods department which provides the foundation from which he and his design team can create such sublime articles of clothing.

Variation is not a quality associated with Bottega Veneta handbags except for a few new colors and slightly re-tooled version of already established classic designs we see from season to season. However, the Bottega Veneta Fall 2009 collection offers handbag lovers and non-Bottega Veneta fans several enticing options. Are these enough to bring new converts to the BV fold? ABSOLUTELY! From crocodile duffels to snakeskin satchels and lizard clutches, Maier truly embraces the subtle nuances of luxury and employs them on every single inch of these bags.

How can one improve on perfection? Maier does this with his use of pailletes, inverted pleating and appliqués. As a rule of thumb, adding stuff to a bag is not a good design choice, particularly when they already have such a busy intrecciato pattern like Bottega Veneta bags do. In spite all the possible negative consequences to such an endeavor, Maier pushes the envelope and opens up an entirely new world for BV handbag fans. The heavily-embellished clutch and top handle bag (pictured above) are collector's pieces worth every bit of what are sure to be expensive price tags.
