MARC by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag

Why does the design team at MARC by Marc Jacobs continue to make their fabulous leather bags look completely ridiculous? I'm not appreciating this trend one bit. I think it's perfectly fine to play around with inexpensive fabric bags, but leather? No way. I was extremely disappointed with the Bombay Satchel and its nonsensical decorative padlock, but at least it was just a padlock. Now we're supposed to embrace a perfectly stylish and practical bag that's been dumbed down with the addition of two metallic birds. I'm sure we're all meant to believe this is a whimsical touch to an otherwise safe bag, but, c'mon, who's going to buy this?

The MARC by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag is priced at $498 which is fine for the sort of leather bags we've grown accustomed to seeing from the MARC line. However, I can't see anyone over the age of sixteen being into a bag that has a couple of birds slapped on it. You know the poor woman carrying this bag will get some crazy looks at the mall. It's a pity this was done to such a great bag. Other than the bird twins, this bag is absolutely perfect. It's roomy (15 x 11 x 5.5) and boasts plenty of storage space including front and rear exterior pockets. You can shorten the strap to make it a true shoulder bag or lengthen it to tote it crossbody style. Let's not forget about the gorgeous black leather on this bag. MARC designs have the softest, most durable leather I've ever come across on bags in this price point.

Just to drive my point home, I provided a photo illustration of what this bag would look like without the little chirpsters. It's somewhat plain looking I'll concede, but much more versatile to be certain. I can't recommend this bag to anyone who's reached adulthood, and I'm peeved to no end about it. They really screwed up what would have been a great, moderately-priced bag. In today's economic atmosphere, designers can't afford to jerk budget-conscious shoppers around.

What 12 year old can afford to spend 500 bucks on a bag? Thanks for removing the birds with what appears to be a high tech magic! The bag certainly does look better and will definitely appeal to a broader market.

the bag is classy as well as playful and an original interpretation of tattoo art motifs (which we are all sick and tired of, so its nice to see it done differently and more subtly). in fact i have this baby on pre order. yes i think the bag would be immature on anyone over 25, but that doesnt mean you have to be 16 to wear it. what i like most about marc by marc jacobs is that's playful and not overly mature. people need to stop taking themselves so seriously. the photoshopped bag on the right is booooring!

The birds are one of the most appealing parts of this bag. I don't think it is childish at all.

I love this bag! I think the birds are what makes it. Without the birds, the bag on the right look like something from Wal-mart, but of course minus the GORGEOUS leather on these bags. I just wished he made it a little smaller. The sasha is quite big, but for Resort 09 the Natasha is going to be a little smaller...I might just have to exchange it.

Although I LOVE this bag...I am waiting for the Natasha and hope it comes out soon! I think the birds on the front are darling and MAKE the bag. I am 30 years old and I can't wait to wear it!!

I have to disagree too! I love the bag.. The birds are definitely a compliment on the bag!! I think it's made for anyone if you dare to wear it that's all! When I first saw it, I didn't think of a teen wearing it!

I fell in love with this bag because of the birds on it. It's what makes this bag stand out from other bags. Classy stylish leather bags are everywhere and easy to find, so I am always searching for something different. The birds are classy not childish, and am definitely getting one soon. I will probably get the Natasha though. I completely disagree with the reviewer. Marc Jacobs always does great work, and I'm so glad he's designed something so fun as well!

I can't believe what a response I've received regarding the "bird" bags. I respect all opinions, even if they differ from mine. With that said, I have seen this bag as well as the other designs from this collection. I've tried them on and inspected them thoroughly. Interestingly enough, when I modeled the Natasha in front of a mirror at the store, a woman near me began snickering and I told her, "I know what you're thinking, and I totally agree with you. I'm doing this merely for research purposes."

There where plenty of "bird" bags on display. At least in my neck of the woods, they're not a big draw. Jacobs' Grovee bags and the Hillier hobo are doing much better here.

Please...the "birds" make it unique...instead of the usual zippers, studs and leather strings hanging off a purple bag...

My only comment...the gold looks great on the brown...they should do silver for the black.

    It's a great bag...roomy, pockets...and pretty interior. Love the strap...there's a new color...newsprint...and it's impossible to find!!

If paying $500 for a bag with birds on it classifies me as someone with no taste, I'll wear that label with a GREAT deal of honor. Thank you.

I'm 19 and I have the Sasha bag in brown and every time I wear it I get sooo many compliments. Mostly from people my age, but also from a lot middle aged women and even men who I don't even know! I got the Natasha when it came out in black, and I swear, I get at least a handful of compliments from strangers on both bags every time I wear it out. The birds are what drew me to the bag and from experience, everyone loves the birds. I think the bag without the birds looks really terrible. Interesting how something like birds can make a bag so great!

I saw a woman carrying this bag in NYC and fell in love with it. I now own it and couldn't be happier. I'm 42 and don't care what anyone else thinks!

I'm so sick of people being pretentious with fashion... fashion is meant to be ART, to be FUN! If you're not going to play with it, what's the point? "Functional" is what my mother tells me bags should be, and sorry Mom, but I prefer Jacobs' advice.

Completely agree with the above statement. There are hundreds of thousands of bags out there that look like the (poorly) photoshopped version. The birds give what otherwise would have been a cookie-cutter bag a unique touch.

I don't own or use Photoshop. I simply blacked the birds out with black "marker" in MS Paint to illustrate my point. I wouldn't waste time photoshopping a bag like this.

Altering the bag is just stupid. Now it looks like any other bargain basement bag you can get at a swap meet.

    "Who's going to buy this?"

I'm really surprised at the author's take on this bag considering that this bag was so popular it sold out at all boutiques and department stores very quickly. In fact, the powers that be at MJ decided to make another small batch for the spring/summer season just to try and quell the demand. Have you looked on ebay? These bags are selling for way more than retail price! So yes, there are obviously PLENTY of women who want to buy this bag.

I myself own this bag and it's just lovely. Just the right size and length. Well placed pockets and just enough whimsy to make the bag unique but not garishly stand out.

Think again before you make such erroneous postings. Maybe you need to rethink what fashion really is.

Bought it, loved it, gave it away when I got tired of it and the girl sold it on Ebay for more than I paid for it. I'm 45 by the way and no one EVER 'snickered' when I carried this bag. I did get lots of compliments and "where can I get one of those?"
Don't be so pretentious - fashion is art and fun.

Just because you don't like the metal sparrows on it (which is actually what makes this bag what it is...) that doesn't mean it's childish or any of the crap you said. You're probably one of those women who go nuts over the latest louie (although they all pretty much look the same) when those things are the ugliest shit ever... just a thought. Marc keeps it fun and varied, lots of people prefer that over the stiff pretentious so called glamour/elegance that some 'fashionistas' such as yourself, favor. Stick to the only kind of 'fashion' you seem to be good at...
