Tod's 2009 fall handbag collection is full new designs and re-vamped goodies. I've already featured the new re-styled D-Bag pictured here in grey with contrast stitching ($1345 for the piccola bauletto), but there are two other bags I'm equally excited about. Tod's Upper Tote Bag, which is already making the rounds on the set of Jessica Alba's new ensemble cast movie, Valentine's Day, is a sophisticated and refined statement piece crafted from supple and durable bison leather. The use of a metal frame top and chain/leather handle will certainly attract die-hard Tod's lovers as well as new fans. The black bison leather Upper Bag retails for $1925, but there are less expensive leather versions that will also be available.
I've purposely saved my personal pick for last. Tod's Girelli Tote Bag has undergone a substantial makeover and the results are fabulous. Derek Lam has demonstrated he can take a Tod's handbag staple and re-interpret it in a modern way while still remaining true to all that makes a Tod's bag appealing to its usual customer. The Girelli Tote sports its signature side turnlock buttons only larger, but the addition of wide, wrap-around handles as well as a detachable chain/leather shoulder strap make this a standout among the rest of Tod's fall collection. The pearl taupe version (pictured) is priced at $1495 which is quite reasonable for such a chic design.
Tod's 2009 fall handbag collection is the best I've seen from this label in years, and it's obvious Derek Lam's creative direction is responsible for all the visionary changes we're seeing. I've selected the "Best Of The Best", but, frankly, all the bags I saw were well-designed and very enticing. Tod's is definitely not just your granny's 'go-to' label any longer.
