Deciding which designer bag was the best of the year is a difficult task. I start out by going through the year's archives and compiling a list of the best. Then I must analyze each design, taking several things into consideration when making my decision - design, price, impact and longevity. So, after careful thought, here is my list of "the Best Bags of 2009" (in no particular order).
- Michael Kors Heidi Satchel (gave Michael Kors bags some much needed credibility)
- Fendi Peek-A-Boo Bag (showed the world that Fendi can still make fabulous bags)
- Chloé Sally Shoulder Bag (a chain strap bag that wasn't a total Chanel rip-off)
- Tod's Re-styled D Bag (demonstrated how tweaking can make a good design even better)
- YSL Roady Hobo (simplicity and modern sophistication at its best)
- Marc Jacobs Hillary Dome Bag (a large, feminine ruffled bag done the right way)
- Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote (rocker chic for the masses)
- YSL Easy Y Bag (what can I say, YSL is fabulous)
- Alexander Wang Coco Duffel (much-hyped, must-have bag that is still going strong into 2010)
And the top honors go to..... the Chloé Paraty. The Paraty, a favorite among fashionistas and celebrities alike, saved Chloé from oblivion. After the departure of Phoebe Philo in 2006, the house of Chloé struggled to find its voice in the fashion world. Then Hannah MacGibbon, former Philo assistant and Chloé's current artistic director, decided to accept the job she had turned down a couple of years before, and, suddenly, things started looking up. In fact, Chloé is poised to be the designer handbag label of 2010 with new versions of the Paraty and new designs like the Marcie and Marlow. Congrats to Chloé, MacGibbon, and all of us. 2009 was great, but 2010 is shaping up to be even better.
On a side note, I wanted to qualify my pick of the AW Coco Duffel. I went back and forth as to whether or not this bag should make the list. I decided, in the end, to include it simply because it was the most talked about bag of the year despite all the complaints about its construction. Just because I may not agree with it making the list, does not mean it should be excluded.
