Be&D Gibson Tote

It's spring so bring on the white bags! What could be more beautiful than a relaxed summer maxi dress paired with the stunning Be&D Gibson Tote in white? The slightly matte patent leather exterior of the 'Gibson' is perfect for the intense white hue it sports. I love the detailing in the top handles where they attach to the bag. The gold-tone hardware contrasts with the stark white leather quite harmoniously without cheapening the overall look of the bag. There are two front exterior zippered pockets with pleat detailing, and an ultra luxe suede-lined interior with more pockets for additional storage. There's a detachable decorative leather tassel that really has no place on this gorgeous bag so tuck it away somewhere and forget about it. Measurements are @ 15 x 13 x 5 with a 6" handle drop.

Salvatore Ferragamo Vara Nilo Hobo

I'm developing a deep love of chocolate/espresso/mocha handbags. The color is so rich and inviting, I can't decide whether I want to wear the bags or bite into them. The Salvatore Ferragamo Vara Nilo Hobo in chocolate is my latest obsession. It was the color that first caught my attention, but the overall design is fabulous as well. The hobo silhouette is accented with beautiful gathered detailing. The folds of leather are held in place with tonal clips running along the center exterior of the bag. There's a single top handle and an open top with magnetic closure. I love the designs' sophisticated simplicity. It relies on manipulating the supple calfskin leather in order to achieve a visually enticing aesthetic and the design decision pays off in spades. It appears that many of this season's Salvatore Ferragamo bags focus on subtle detailing, particularly along the center of the bag. The designs are most definitely appealing, and employing such versatile colors as this chocolate brown on them doesn't hurt either. If you think brown is not the best spring/summer color, put on a billowing nude-colored blouse or dress and compliment it with this bag. I promise you'll look amazing.

"I ♥ 80s" Contest on LUISAVIAROMA

I am so entering this "I ♥ 80s" contest because I really do love the 80s. I'm willing to humiliate myself to win a 2000 Euro shopping spree on LUISAVIAROMA.COM. All you have to do to enter the contest is sign up for LUISAVIAROMA's e-mail updates and submit a photo of yourself from the 80s or, if you're not old enough to remember the 80s, a photo recreating an 80s look. It's that simple. Now to find that picture of me circa 1986 when I thought I was Madonna. I'm off to hunt for photos...

Spotlight On.....Samsāra Handbags

Earth Day is behind us but that doesn't mean we can't continue our journey toward awareness. Handbag lovers are especially blessed to have more and more environmentally and socially responsible options available to them. Last week I wrote about Matt & Nat. This established and respected designer label produces some of the chicest handbags around. Now the creative mind behind Matt & Nat, Inder Bedi, is launching his latest accessories endeavor - Samsāra.

Samsāra, which means rebirth in Sanskrit, is a collection of vegan accessories created with the goal of affecting change on a local as well as global level. One dollar will be donated to a non-profit organization of your choice for every bag sold. This year, Samsāra has selected four causes - International Aid, Animal Welfare, Women's Issues and the Environment - that shoppers can choose from to send their donated dollar to.

Not only are Samsāra accessories Eco-friendly and socially responsible, they're also well-made and relatively inexpensive. The Winkler Pebble Clutch and Vaughan Pebble Hobo (pictured) are simple, utilitarian and stylish bags. No bells or whistles on these designs, ladies. Instead you get thoughtful designs that'll put a smile on your face as you think about the part you've played in helping our planet and those who live in it.

Winkler Pebble Clutch: $70 - vegan leather exterior, antique brass hardware, fold-over top with zippered closure with strap and snap, two front open patch pockets under fold-over flap, rear zippered pocket and lined interior with additional zippered pocket. Available in black, cognac, plum and white. Measurements: 12 x 6.75

Vaughan Pebble Hobo: $155 - vegan leather exterior, antique brass hardware, single shoulder strap, large front exterior open pocket and lined interior with zippered and pouch pockets for additional storage. Measurements: 16.5 x 14.5 x 3.75.

Carlos Falchi Fringed Hobo

As the saying goes, "A pictures speaks a thousand words...". When you look at this photo of the Carlos Falchi Fringed Hobo you realize that the picture really does speak volumes. Must I expound on this bag's obvious hideousness? Using exotic skins, fringe and heavy chains on the same bag is never a good idea. The more I stare at this thing the sadder I become. Something like this should never be created. It's just wrong. I'm sure you'll agree with me on this. I'll stop now because I'm becoming nauseous. Just look at the picture to imagine what else I'm dying to say about it.

Celebrity Style: Jessica Alba and the Derek Lam Romina Bag

Jessica Alba photo via Celebutopia

This question goes out to anyone living in So Cal - Is it really so cold there that practically every celebrity I see is clothed in winter garb? Just a thought, ladies, so please get back to me on this so I can put it out of my head for good. I'm in Miami, so anytime I see someone in LA dressed for the Alps when I'm over here melting in the heat I start to wonder just how similar these two states really are.

Moving on to the object of my musings, here is the always beautiful Jessica Alba carrying Derek Lam's latest handbag endeavor, the Romina Bag. Smooth grey leather, pleating detailing and a myriad of seams are the focus of this design. A combination drawstring/magnetic closure, side flap pocket and lined interior with zip pocket round out the bag's features. Don't think I've forgotten to mention the metal chain shoulder strap. I've saved it for last because it's described as a "detachable" strap. I'm assuming this is a description mistake. Why would the only strap on the bag be detachable? Makes absolutely no sense, right? Anyhow, I like the 'Romina' on Jessica. It has plenty of space and looks quite stylish with her layered outfit. If you like the Derek Lam Romina Bag, take advantage of Shopbop's 25% off all full-priced handbag sale. You can bring the price down from $1690 to $1266.25.

Mother's Day is just a couple of weeks away, so it's time to think about what to get that special mom in your life. There's no better time to scoop up a fab handbag for mom than when it's on sale. Gilt Groupe, one of our favorite private-sale sites on the web, has a great selection of handbags at ridiculously reduced prices. Choose from designers like Kara Ross, Tory Burch, Gryson, Lauren Merkin and Lambertson Truex among others. Don't wait too long because inventory is going fast. Use this special invitation to sign-up for Gilt Groupe if you haven't done so already.

Celebrity Style: Ashley Tisdale and the Givenchy Chain Belt Maxi Nightingale Satchel

Ashley Tisdale photo via Celebutopia

Ashley Tisdale is sporting a fabulous handbag this spring. Her current choice in arm candy is the Givenchy Chain Belt Maxi Nightingale Satchel, and I couldn't approve more of her selection. There are several elements that make this design a great option for spring, summer or throughout the entire year for that matter. The veiny, ivory leather is gorgeous and feels luxurious to the touch. The roomy 15 x 24 x 7.5 size makes the 'Nightingale' a rather practical choice for anyone who requires a functional bag yet doesn't want to sacrifice style in order to have it. The top handles are sturdy and well-constructed, but it's the detachable shoulder strap that really sells the bag. I've never seen whip-stitching, grommets and chains meld together so beautifully. It's a slightly "rocker chic" decorative touch that will appeal to women of all ages. The interior is pretty standard with fabric lining and several smaller pockets provided for additional storage. If you still haven't settled on a spring/summer bag, I'd certainly recommend the Givenchy Chain Belt Maxi Nightingale Satchel. Just beware of the price tag. It's a doozy!

Balenciaga Bubble City

I hate to admit this, but I had completely written this bag off. Even though I'm a huge Balenciaga fan (as my closet can attest to), that doesn't mean I swallow anything Nicholas Guesquire decides to throw our way. Some of his more creative interpretations of the classic 'City' bag (multi-color woven City?!?) leave much to be desired. At first glance, I'd classified the Balenciaga Bubble City as one of those kooky bags. Upon closer inspection, however, I found that the "bubble" effect was not a gimmick but rather an opportunity to display the beauty and versatility of a Balenciaga bag's legendary leather. The supple lambskin lends itself perfectly to such a textured look. All the basic features remain unchanged - hand-stitched top handles, zippered top, detachable padded shoulder strap, front zip pocket, fabric-lined interior with zippered pocket and traditional aged brass hardware. The only change, aside from the bubbled leather, of course, is the price. The Bubble City will run you an additional $800 over the basic 'City' bag's $1395 price tag. Yikes! While I changed my original opinion on the Bubble City, I don't love it enough to spend that much on it.

Valentino Studded Petale Rose Tote

The Valentino Studded Petale Rose Tote is a statement piece not for the faint of heart. There are several design hurdles to overcome if we're to appreciate a bag like this. While some might instantly find this design beautiful, others might write it off as a big bag with lots of studs and an even bigger decorative rosette. If I were to play devil's advocate, I'd have to concede that all these design criticisms are true - from a certain point of view. I happen to believe that the "BIG ROSE" is quite lovely. You really must see this bag in person to realize that the "BIG ROSE" is not as cumbersome as it appears. I also like the studded look on this particular design. The studs are not huge and pointy, but are relatively small and rounded in shape. These silver studs compliment the tote's nude color in a way gold studs could never have done. That combination would've "cheapened" the bag's look to the point of ruination. This particular pairing is 'rocker chic' with a soft edge. The style juxtaposition exemplified on the Studded Petale Rose Tote is an emerging trend in handbags, and I love it. Just wait 'till you see the Studded Dior Lady Dior Bag - fabulous!

Christian Louboutin Schoolita Framed Bag

Christian Louboutin makes fierce shoes. Handbags, well, not so much. Some of the label's evening clutches are cute and stylish, but the day bags have left much to be desired. The Schoolita Framed Bag is one notable exception. I can never resist a framed top bag, and this one is actually very well designed. The framed top is limited to a half-moon along the top edges. That leaves the sturdy top handles free to be done in more suitable calfskin leather. The pleating detail along the front and rear exterior is a feminine touch that softens the angular silhouette, and tonal patches along the bottom edges provide additional strength to the overall structured look of the 'Schoolita'. A magnetic closure and signature Louboutin red-lined interior with small storage pockets round out the bag's fatures. Measurements are a surprisingly roomy 15 x 12 x 5.5. My favorite aspect of the 'Schoolita' is its' demure navy marine color. It helps the bag stretch its' day-time usefullness. I'd love to see this design done in black python as an alternative to the basic evening clutch. I just happen to prefer handbags to clutches when I go out at night, that's all.

P.S. - Ditch the dangling gold-tone logo charm. It looks childish and is totally unnecessary.

Anya Hindmarch + Jimmy Choo = Fashion Heaven

As I've said many times before, ladies, keep your clothing simple and let your accessories do the talking. There is nothing better than a handbag or a pair of shoes to help define ones' style. If you're a woman who falls in either extreme of the fashion spectrum (petite or large and chunky), then shoes and a handbag will always be your best friends. They don't discriminate or make you feel inadequate. On the contrary, they can brighten up even the darkest of moods.

I've always kept my style very basic - tees, jeans, a belt, boots or sandals (not flip flops!) and a fabulous handbag. Whether I'm heading to the market or out to dinner, my style remains pretty much unchanged. It's my choice of shoes and handbag that will mark the difference between the two looks. To better illustrate my point, I've chosen a chic clutch and matching sandals that will elevate any look, either casual or dressy, to fashion heaven. It isn't difficult to understand why I'd recommend Anya Hindmarch and Jimmy Choo to anyone who's searching for a great bag and equally fabulous shoes. When done right, as these two labels always manage to do, your go-to accessories can be simple, sophisticated and sublimely beautiful.

The Anya Hindmarch Louisa Patent Clutch, with its' sleek, black patent leather exterior, large decorative, faceted stone and adequate 12 x 5 x 2 size, will enhance the most basic of styles while complimenting a more dressed-up evening look. The Jimmy Choo Samoa Kid Sandals are equally versatile. These black leather basket strap sandals sport a 4.5" heel, front circular cut-out, zippered back and open toe design. They can dress up a pair of capri pants (pictured) or show off a simple dress. The possibilities are endless. While both the Anya Hindmarch Louisa Patent Clutch and the Jimmy Choo Samoa Kid Sandals can certainly stand on their own, they make quite a formidable fashion pair when joining forces.

Jack Rabbit The Auteur Hobo

The Jack Rabbit The Auteur Hobo is a visually interesting design. The diagonal pleat along the front exterior is a simple detail that distinguishes the bag from other hobos. In fact, the pleat itself has a function - it hides a zippered pocket. Genius! The goldtone hardware and turquoise leather compliment one another beautifully, and the clever shoulder strap adjusts to convert the bag from a hobo to a more urban, cross-body style. This is a well-thought out design and is a true testament to designer Mollie Culligan's creative prowess.

15 x 16 x 2

R & Y Augousti R5 Clutch

What does a sleek, sophisticated eel-skin clutch go for these days? Well, this R & Y Augousti R5 Clutch is priced at $565. Not too bad for a large 11.5 x 6 x 3 clutch with a fold-over flap and magnetic closure that features an interesting decorative black stone and boasts an edgy grey/black exterior and roomy interior with a rare zippered pocket. This is a fantastic day-to-evening clutch for women that prefer a 'casual chic' look. As any handbag lover knows, keep your clothes simple and let your bag do the talking.

Beirn Jenna Watersnake Tote

I've had my eye on this bag for some time now. Something about it keeps bringing me back for an occasional virtual visit. Could it be the tote's large size begging to be filled with all sorts of knick-knacks I simply can't live without? Probably. Perhaps it's the sturdy construction behind this chic, urban design that incessantly beckons me? Most likely. Or is it the insanely stunning espresso watersnake exterior that makes me swoon in front of my desktop like a star-struck school girl? Of course! In fact, everything about the Beirn Jenna Watersnake Tote entices the senses, so much so that I'm debating whether or not I need another tote. I already scooped up a MARC by Marc Jacobs tote last month. Can I really justify adding this one to my collection? Oh yeah! Who cares about justifying anything, I WANT THIS BAG!!! (Here's hoping my hubby reads this and remembers Mother's Day is fast approaching).

IGNES Josephine Max Hobo

It was just about two years ago that I first had the pleasure of meeting Maria Estrada, founder and creative director of IGNES. In 2007, IGNES was recognized with the "Most Socially Responsible Handbag" award at the Independent Handbag Designer Awards. The brands environmentally and socially-thoughtful philosophy is evident in every single IGNES handbag. Calfskin, pony-hair, ostrich and cowhides used on every IGNES handbag are all by-products of animals bred on free-range farms or "estancias" in South America. The Uruguayan artisans responsible for creating these cosmopolitan classic designs are of the utmost priority to Maria and Ignacio, and they take pride in the fact that their country's exceptional artistic talents are well-represented on an international level by these hard working individuals. Every woman that buys an IGNES handbag (myself included) can be proud to carry a bag that is not only unique but that is also responsibly produced.

I already own the IGNES Sofia (which has seen plenty of action), but now I'm falling in love with another IGNES design. The Josephine Max Hobo ($360) is my current obsession. It features a gorgeous braided top handle and zippered top with tassel detailing. The interior is well-appointed as all IGNES bags are done so with today's modern woman in mind. The 'Josephine Max' is quite roomy measuring 16.8 x 10.4 x 3.2 with a 10' handle drop. The smaller 'Josephine' is equally chic, but I prefer the Max's size because I love big bags. The aqua/warm pewter version pictured here is lovely and would compliment my wardrobe staples, tees, jeans and boots, perfectly. I can't wait until IGNES adds the 'Josephine Max' to their bespoke inventory. I'm afraid I'd have to buy a few in different colors and skins just to satisfy my love for this fabulous design (hint, hint, Maria - add it to your bespoke list!). Click here to read my previous interview with Maria Estrada and learn more about this environmentally and socially responsible label.

Bag the Habit Reusable Shopping Tote

I can't say I'm the most eco-friendly consumer around, but I do try to do my best here and there. Two or three trips a week to the grocery store are not an uncommon occurrence in my home. I used to bring home tons of plastic grocery bags. While I recycled most by using them to dispose of garbage, I felt there had to be a better way to bring home the bacon. Then I saw reusable shopping bags at my local market. These bags were sturdier, held many more groceries and were very inexpensive. Now I see these bags all over the place. They're everywhere from my local pharmacy to Barnes & Noble to Target. It seems everyone wants to help the environment. That's great. I use my bags all the time, but I'd love to have a couple of reusable bags that were, how shall I put this gently, a tad more fashionable.

This is where the Bag the Habit Reusable Tote comes into play. The eco-friendly brand sells the most chic and classic-looking reusable totes around. Not only is the BtH tote stylish, it's extremely practical. It can carry up to 30lbs, measures a whopping 27.5 x 22 x 6 when opened, features comfortable padded handles for carrying or toting over the shoulder and folds closed into a perfect 4.5 x 4.5 square you can easily store in your handbag. It can hold over 3x's that of a standard grocery bag or 3 shoe boxes (DSW is calling my name now!).

Not only will the BtH Reusable Tote help you make a difference in the environment, its' manufacturing has also gone a long way to keep the impact to the environment at a minimum. The totes are made from recycled materials and low-impact dyes and are water-resistant. They come in three colors (plum, chocolate and midnight/aqua) and are very affordable. You can purchase any one tote for $18 or choose all three colors for $45. Now you can look great while you shop and feel good about the environment all at once.

Shop for the Bag the Habit Signature Reusable Tote here.

Happy Earth Day! Today Señora Cartera is focusing on the environment and how we as handbag collectors can support eco-friendly designers. The best way to accomplish this is by buying socially and environmentally responsible products. Matt & Nat redefines what is means to fashionably responsible. Their accessories are chic, design-centric products devoid of animal by-products. This vegan brand has evolved into an edgy, modern label whose designs go far beyond being eco-friendly. Fellow designers as well as consumers have ackhowledged the impact Matt & Nat has made in the fashion world. Handbags like the Avril Pool Bag are perfect examples of the harmony between beauty and ethics.

This gorgeous blue tote bag which measures a roomy 17 x 11 x 6 is crafted from vegan leather and features pockets along the front exterior and a recycled suede-lined interior with cell phone/PDA pockets. Before anyone begins to doubt whether or not these bags are indeed stylish and well made, I have seen them in person and they are fabulous. The fact that this brand is able to create such amazing eco-friendly designs is great. When you factor in their incredibly low price tags, you begin to appreciate their worth in today's handbag market.

Celebrity Style: Megan Fox and the Botkier James Satchel

Megan Fox photo courtesy of Botkier

Megan Fox is a stunning woman who looks fabulous on the red carpet. However, her natural beauty and fresh, chic style are more than enough to set her apart from the rest of the Hollywood starlets. Here she is at LAX (who looks this good at the airport for goodness sake?!?) looking gorgeous as usual. Of course, I must focus on her handbag because that's what I do. Megan is sporting the Botkier James Satchel. This modern design is a perfect example of that understated "rocker chic" style Megan pulls off so well. The front diagonal zippered pockets with tassel detailing provide an edgy yet not over-done look to the 'James' that is difficult to achieve, but which Botkier executes effortlessly. I love Megan's choice of cocoa brown leather, but there are several other color options available that will definitely entice handbag collectors (the deep purple version is TDF!).

Dior Charming Cannage Bavolet Satchel

What is it with Dior lately? They seem to be churning out charming, sophisticated designs faster than I can write about them. Speaking of charming, it's no wonder the designers responsible for the Dior Charming Cannage Bavolet Satchel decided to give this bag such an appropriate name. The satin, quilted-pattern exterior is feminine and flirty. Rolled leather handles with criss-cross wrap leather detailing, polished silver hardware and rouching along the top edges are classic touches that really pull the design together. The zippered main compartment is flanked by two exterior flat pockets that run the width of the bag, and the nylon-lined interior boasts several smaller pockets for additional storage. Measurements are an adequate 12 x 7.5 x 5. This Dior design is available in plum and silver - both great color options that'll compliment plenty of outfits throughout the year. While I'm usually weary of satin bags, a close friend of mine that owns a satin Dior boston bag assures me Dior made their satin bags stylish as well as surprisingly resistant. There is no better endorsement than that of a satisfied customer.

Maysa Borges Metallic Python Clutch

Remeber the name Maysa Borges. This talented, Brazilian-born handbag designer redefines luxury by thinking "outside the box". Maysa's unique and inspired designs are crafted from a myriad of materials such as sequins, crystals, exotic skins and even coconut beads. Simple, classic styles combined with unusual materials come together to create elegant pieces any woman would be thrilled to have. Maysa's chic bags became an instant hit, and it's not too hard to understand why.

A fine example of Maysa's artistic talent is this gorgeous shiny bag that is calling my name and begging me to buy it. The Maysa Borges Metallic Python Clutch gives me exactly what I want from an evening bag - style, function and comfort. The trick to buying the right evening clutch is to make certain it will suit your needs. Don't try to downsize what you need to carry just so you can get that cute little clutch you're longing for. Take the time to find a bag large enough to store all your things. This stunning metallic silver genuine python clutch, with its' charming vintage chrome framed top and kiss-lock closure, provides plenty of style. Its' 12 x 7.5 size allows for lots of space to store all your essentials - a small wallet, keys, cell phone, compact and a lipstick. Who says an evening bag has to be the size of a soap bar to be "acceptable"? This is the 21st century, ladies, and it's high time we demand style and comfort from all our designer bags - even evening bags. Thank goodness there are well-designed bags out there for us to choose from. In case you're not in the market for an evening bag, perhaps an ultra-luxe oversized clutch might be more appealing an option. Be sure to check out Maysa's equally stunning Oversized Python Clutch which measures a very roomy 17 x 9 and is priced at $450.

Celebrity Style: Denise Richards and the Treesje Sophia Hobo

Denise Richards photo via Celebutopia

Why do people insist on vilifying celebrities? Take Denise Richards for instance. Everyone loved her until she became involved with Richie Sambora and divorced Charlie Sheen. Folks, she’s a person just like anyone else. She makes mistakes like anyone else. The only person that should be concerned about what Denise Richards does with her personal life is, well, Denise Richards. To expect this woman to be some sort of a role model simply because she’s a celebrity is a ridiculous notion. How many of us can say we could be role models for others to follow. I’d venture to say not many. So I’ll pass on discussing Denise’s personal life and focus on her absolutely fabulous bag.

Denise was photographed recently with the Treesje Sophia Hobo. This modern bag from Treesje’s feminine ‘Maiden’ collection features braiding detail, a trim, foldover flap with magnetic snap closure, exterior pockets, and a well-appointed interior with additional pockets for storage. The metal, gold-tone link detail on the flap is very luxe. I’m not too sure I like the small pouch pocket on the front (reminds me of a kangaroo), but the overall design is aesthetically pleasing and quite functional. Measurements are 14.5 x 14 x 5. The ‘Sophia’ comes in grey, cherry red, creme and Denise’s gorgeous chartreuse version.

Louis Vuitton Cabas Ipanema GM

I was born in Miami Beach and have lived here my entire life, and, yet, I hate going to the beach. Yup! I can't stand it. I avoid going like I would the plague. Go figure. However, I love beach gear. Bathing suits, sandals, sarongs, beach totes - you name it, I love it. If I were persuaded to schlep on over to the beach this summer, I'd love to carry my things inside this stylish beach tote. The Louis Vuitton Cabas Ipanema GM tote (also available in the smaller PM size) is the perfect beach bag if you want to look the part and don't mind spending the money to do so. This $1250 tote is crafted from cotton canvas, sports a beautiful sculpted silhouette, and features an open top with snap closure, a front zippered pocket, interior patch pockets and an additional water-resistant wallet size pouch to keep your essentials dry. Measurements are 22 x 14 x 8.5.

Although I know a trip to the beach is highly unlikely for me, that doesn't mean I can't find plenty of places to tote my 'Ipanema' bag to. I live in Miami so this bag could be worn year-round without any problems. Lucky for me!
As a worthy incentive to purchase the Cabas Ipanema GM or any other Louis Vuitton product from their U.S. website, the iconic fashion giant is offering a 15% donation of all online purchases made on Earth Day (Wednesday, April 22nd) to The Climate Project. You can find out more about The Climate Project here.

Salvatore Ferragamo Eco-friendly Calfskin Hobo

An eco-friendly designer handbag from Salvatore Ferragamo? Is such a thing even possible? You bet, ladies. I was as shocked as some of you probably are right now, and, yet, this Calfskin Hobo is just that. What better way to celebrate Earth Day (Wednesday, April 22nd) than by splurging on a designer bag that's friendly to the environment as well.

So what makes this such an eco-friendly bag? Well, for starters the supple brown calfskin leather exterior was tanned with eco-safe vegetable dyes. Notice any hardware, ladies? Nope. The bag is metal-free. This stylish hobo measures a roomy 14 x 17.5 x 2 and is lined in hemp. The front braiding detail and toggle closure are visually appealing which just goes to show you can create something that's good for the environment without sacrificing style or function. Be honest, if I hadn't told you this was an eco-friendly bag there would be nothing aesthetically speaking that would have given it away. Kudos to the design team at Salvatore Ferragamo for designing such a thoughtful and stylish bag.

Marni Opens 2nd N.Y. Shop in Uptown Manhattan

Anyone living within the "5 Burroughs" (or even a short train from Manhattan) can now enjoy not one, but two Marni stores. After 7 years in SoHo, Marni has expanded its' N.Y. holdings to include a 2,500 square foot, two-level store on East 67th St. Huh? Wouldn't Fifth Ave or Madison Ave have made for more strategic locations? Apparently not. Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni's creative director, says their stores tend to be discreet locations with a hidden element that appeals to their customers. OK, I'll take her word for it. Regardless of the store's location, the actual interior of the store is said to be as 'eclectic' as the designer label itself. Unfinished walls, hole-filled ceilings, and hanging mannequins all come together to give Marni's second N.Y. venture a decidedly urban feel. With reports indicating the luxury market is poised to take a nose-dive within the next year, all that is left for moi to do is wish the Italian fashion label continued success. So, NYC ladies, check out Marni's new Uptown store while it's still there.
P.S. - There are plans to open a store in Vegas as well as freestanding accessories stores (be still my heart!)

3.1 Phillip Lim Cavanaugh Doctor Bag

What would possess a designer to take a perfectly chic and timeless silhouette like that of the doctor bag and do this to it? Seriously, why do it? The only answer I can come up with is that someone on Phillip Lim's creative team (hopefully not the designer himself) thought the Cavanaugh Doctor Bag was fabulous and gave the go-ahead to manufacture it. I've got news for everyone that works for 3.1 Phillip Lim, this bag ain't pretty. It's downright laughable. The leather fringe tassels with silver polished bead detailing remind me of the ponytails I used to sport in elementary school. This isn't necessarily the image I want popping into my head when shopping for a handbag. Don't think that the funny tassels are the only thing wrong with this design. Oh no, there's more.

The large 17 x 13 x 9 size would make this a great day bag, but the designers forgot to include a convenient detachable shoulder strap. Lugging around such a large bag when it's filled up and heavy is not an option in my book. The top handles only offer a 5' drop which my chubby arms could never manage. Then there's the tonal leather band along the rear exterior of the bag. It doesn't wrap around the bag, it's just kinda there, on the back, for no apparent reason. Ugh! Aside from the fetching cobalt blue color and retro framed top, there's nothing that could persuade me to buy the 'Cavanaugh'. I could go on, but I think everyone gets the point. The 3.1 Phillip Lim Cavanaugh Doctor Bag is a joke and certainly not worth its' $825 price tag.

Celebrity Style: Alanis Morissette and the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Tote

Alanis Morissette photo via Celebutopia

When I was in college, Jagged Little Pill was required listening. I constantly played Alanis Morissette's CD while I drove to and from classes. While I loved Alanis, the queen of 'anger rock' was not known for her fashion sense. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this photo of the 90s music phenom toting one sumptuous travel bag. There's no denying Bottega Veneta is one of the world's leading leather goods purveyor. Their expert craftsmanship and iconic "intrecciato" weaving pattern have propelled this Italian fashion house to the highest levels of the fashion hierarchy.

Alanis is certainly traveling in style in the company of the Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Tote. With 15 x 20 x 2 dimensions, BV's tote is the ideal designer travel bag. Quality materials and construction allow for repeated abuse (tisk, tisk, ladies, never abuse such a fine example of handbag design). The rolled leather top handles and detachable shoulder strap give you the option of carrying on the arm or over the shoulder (preferable when you're dashing through the airport). By choosing the BV Intrecciato Tote as a travel/weekender bag, Alanis has made a wise investment. Her BV tote bag will still be in pristine condition long after "You Oughta Know" is a distant memory.

Chloé Safari Sally Shoulder Bag

This review will be short and not very sweet. While I love the Chloé Sally Shoulder Bag, I loathe the Chloé Safari Sally Shoulder Bag. It's ugly, unnecessary, and, frankly, insulting. The folks at Chloé expect women to fork over $2560 for a jungle-print canvas bag (even if it does have a snakeskin flap) when we could have the stunning leather version in a lovely violet hue for $1995. Is this choice even debatable? Of course not. Designers need to step back when they're onto a good thing or risk "jumping the shark". Chloé has definitely done so with this ridiculous hag-bag version.
