Celebrity Style: Honoring Michael Jackson's Fashion Legacy

Photos: Google

I wanted to take this opportunity to express my sadness over the untimely passing of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Michael gave us such amazing music that it's difficult to put into words the extent of his influence over generations of music lovers all over the world. My earliest memories of MJ were of the Jackson 5 singing and dancing together. As a teen, I'd make the trip to my best friend's home to watch his video premieres on MTV (I had no cable back then), and, of course, I bought all his records. Like many people I know, Michael Jackson provided the soundtrack for our lives and I thank him for that. May he now enjoy the peace he was never allowed to have here on Earth.

Remembering Michael's influence on music got me thinking about his appreciation for fashion. There's no need to enumerate the fashion trends started by MJ, particularly in the 80s. We all know them, and I'm sure many of us would prefer to forget them. Michael himself remained somewhat of a fashion maven, even if his style choices appeared eccentric to most of us. In recent years, Michael was fond of wearing women's RTW pieces from labels like Balmain and Givenchy. I think fashion was a sort of armor for Michael. He hid behind his clothes and accessories to mask the loneliness that enveloped him.

If there is one MJ trend that has stood the test of time it's sequins. I got rid of my bedazzler years ago, but I still gravitate toward a refined yet blinged-out pair of sequin shoes or sparkly clutch. Here are a couple of ways you can honor Michael's fashion legacy. Judith Leiber's Wavy Curve Minaudiere made entirely of crystals in a black to white ombré pattern can be pre-ordered for $2795 via Neiman Marcus. If the Leiber bag is way out of your budget, perhaps these gorgeous Valentino Sequin Peep-Toe Pumps (pre-order for $795 via Saks) are more within your reach.

We All Need A Little "Be&D" In Our Lives

Top: Cosette Hobo in navy - $895; Garbo Satchel in black - $1390
Bottom: Kan Kan Tote in gunmetal - pre-order for $1390; Kan Kan Clutch in grey - $595

On my recent trip to the stores, I happened to notice what a healthy selection of Be&D bags were available for purchase. Be&D is not an obvious brand to everyone. In fact, none of my girlfriends have ever heard of it, and that is a real travesty. I think all of us could use a little "Be&D" in our lives.

There are many styles to choose from. Whether it's the celeb-favorite Kan Kan Tote, the iconic Garbo Satchel or the über-stylish Cosette Hobo, there's a Be&D bag with your name on it. I'm totally smitten with the clutch version of the 'Kan Kan' (pictured above) and with good reason. Its 12 x 8 x 1 size, ruffle and stud-accented exterior and detachable leather/chain shoulder strap make it one of the chicest clutches you could ever own. Nab the inexpensive Kan Kan clutch or shop other Be& D handbags, including their new fall arrivals, here.

Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel Update

It was love at first sight when I layed eyes on the Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel almost two months ago. Slowly we're seeing the 'Blythe' make its way on-line and I couldn't be happier - until now. Even a smart, modern and chic design like the Blythe Satchel is not immune to developing some cracks in its armor. One of the things I like the most about the 'Blythe' is its textured leather exterior. On the black and red versions we've featured before, this effect only serves to enhance the bag's overall urban design. What a difference color can make, though. The textured leather and buckle detailing work well together on darker colors, but seem a bit "blah" on the taupe version. I'm not saying the taupe 'Blythe' is awful, just not as intoxicatingly stunning as the black or red interpretations. The Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel is available in bangin' black or tepid taupe for $1895 via Neiman Marcus.

Marc Jacobs St. Marks Stam

The Marc Jacobs Stam, once the bane of my existence, is finally and forever redeemed in my eyes. Jacobs has seen the light and decided to elevate his iconic satchel to the heights of fashion forward design. I previewed MJ's fall '09 handbag collection a few weeks ago, and couldn't wait to see the Stam make the comeback it richly deserves.

Those of you that know me are all to familiar with the reason why Señora Cartera was ever created. I owe it all the the 'Stam' and my utter disdain for it at the time it came on the scene. I couldn't understand what all the hype was about even though the Stam possessed all the design elements I admire the most on a handbag. What can I say, Marc Jacobs managed to create one heck of a granny bag! Yet he's finally understood what makes the Stam so great and embraced its potential with a renewed sense of modern relevancy.

From unique leather detailing to studs to decorative jewels, the Stam has been overhauled for the fall so prepare yourselves, ladies. The first re-incarnation I'm featuring is the St. Marks Stam. The patent leather cut-out pattern used throughout the entire exterior is stunning in and of itself. I'd have been more than satisfied with that alone, but Marc and his design team decided to pull out all the stops with the addition of strategically placed faceted jewels giving the 'St. Marks' Stam a touch of Hollywood glam. The deal maker of this particular version of the Stam has to be the use of a tonal chain link shoulder strap as opposed to the accursed clunky gold one we're so used to seeing. If they'd decided to use the traditional strap, the bag would've simply fallen flat. What a difference a strap can make. What Marc has created is nothing short of perfection. I sit here in awe of his obvious, if sometimes misguided, talent.

The Marc Jacobs St. Marks Stam is back ordered (what a surprise), so don't expect to see it come in the mail anytime before September or possibly October. You can still pre-order it in black for $2395 via Neiman Marcus.

Michael Kors Zuma Satchel

After my whirlwind reconicense mission yesterday, which included the Chanel Fall '09 trunk show, I have a slew of new as well as older styles to recommend to my loyal readers which I'll be featuring over the next few days.

The majority of bags featured on Señora Cartera and Señora Cartera On A Budget are designs I've had a chance to inspect in person. I'm always hesitant to give my stamp of approval on something unless I've had it in my hands, but sometimes, especially when dealing with upcoming seasonal bags, it's pretty much impossible to do so. Then there are instances when I see a bag in a store and walk right past it without even a second glance. I'm guilty of breaking my own cardinal rule when it comes to handbag shopping - never dismiss ANYTHING! Hold a bag, carry a bag, fill it up with your stuff and walk around with it. Only then can you really say a bag is not worth your time or money.

I happened to make this mistake with the Michael Kors Zuma Satchel some time ago, but decided to give it a second chance yesterday. I'm so happy I did because it's exactly the sort of bag that fits my daily handbag requirements and does it with an unexpected dose of style. Neiman Marcus has a shiny bronze version of the Zuma Satchel available for pre-order ($995) for those of you that like their bags to pack a bit of a punch. The 14.5 x 11 x 5.5 satchel has flat top handles that fit nice and snug over the shoulder. It also features a dual zippered top which, in my opinion, is the most practical closure you can ask for on a satchel. The "knots", however, really make the design stand out for me. They're not only decorative but they also give the bag a slouchy shape that keeps it looking casual and cool. I tried on the white version at the MK store and loved it, but I have a major metallics obsession going on right now so the bronze version is calling my name. If shiny leather is too much for you to handle, there's a basic black leather rendition also available for pre-order thru the Michael Kors website.

Chanel Paris-Moscow 2009 Handbag Collection Preview

After checking out the Chanel Fall '09 trunk show at my local Saks, I can safely say I've been bitten by the Chanel bug again. My excitement is largely due to the Paris-Moscow collection meticulously crafted under the watchful eye of Karl Lagerfeld himself. Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel's life-long interest in Russia, including her supposed amorous relationship with Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, Lagerfeld weaves a tapestry of Parisian elegance and tsarist Russian opulence in a way only the Kaiser and Coco herself could ever do.

The collection is luxurious and one-of-a-kind. My particular favorites (among too many to enumerate here) where a Kremlin rooftop-etched classic lambskin flap ($2900) as well as a pyramid-shaped quilted lambskin tote. Chanel collectors will definitely want to order the gold classic flap with metalized buffalo skin and dangling 'Fabergé' egg-like decorative pendant. These are but the tip of the iceberg for what Chanel is bringing us this fall. Call Luz, a fabulous and extremely patient SA, at Saks Dadeland in Miami (305-662-8655 Ext. 355/356) or e-mail her at luz_hoyos@s5a.com for ordering and pricing information.

Donna Karan Gotham Satchel

Ever wonder how designers come up with their handbag names? I know I do. The Donna Karan Gotham Satchel is the sort of bag that would normally drive me crazy in this respect. Why in the world was it named after the fictional city from the Batman comics? I asked my husband what his take on the bag was, and I got a rather interesting response. My sweet husband thinks the name is an obvious choice for a bag that, when expanded, resembles a bat. Rrriiiggghhhttt. I mean, that's what I get for asking his opinion about a bag, but, interestingly enough, I think he was onto something. Well, sort of onto something in a roundabout, nonsensical way. The dark, distressed leather and wrap-around zipper detailing give the 'Gotham' an urban look unlike any bag I've seen of late. It has a framed top, open side pockets, comfortable top handles and detachable shoulder strap. I'm particularly fond of the espresso brown leather/silver hardware combination used on the bag as well. It's an interesting design and an improvement from what we've seen over the past year from Donna Karan in terms of handbags. I'm hopeful the Gotham Satchel is a sign of things to come - good things. I suddenly feel the urge to watch "The Dark Knight" now. Figures!

Gucci Fall 2009 Handbag Collection: A Few Good Bags & Some Copycat Designs?

Head over to Saks.com and check out the Gucci Fall 2009 handbag collection. It's a relatively predictable selection from the Italian fashion label, but there are a few notable exceptions. First up is the Galaxy Hobo ($1500) shown here in a hot shade of metallic blue and sporting a seriously chic, if somewhat uncomfortable, chain-link shoulder strap. Oh, heck, who cares about the strap when the overall look is fabulous. Another winner is the Sukey Guccissima Leather Tote ($1495). Gucci fans will love the dark chocolate logo-embossed leather exterior, pleating detail and relaxed, slouchy shape. Even with the logos, this bag has enough style to appeal to non-Gucci collectors.

Another design that's sure to be a hit (in fact, it already is) comes in the form of the New Jackie Shoulder Bag. I'm not a fan of the bag, but I can understand why others are ga-ga over it. The black deerskin leather version ($2100), in particular, is not overtly "Gucci". It's roomy, has a great shape and an intriguing front tab lock. The true winner of the entire bunch is the Lucy Clutch ($830). The dark grey pebbled leather version is simply divine. It measures 13 x 6 x 1.5 and features a fold-over, zippered top with decorative tassel pull and bamboo turn-lock closure.

Some designs are eerily similar to other designer bags. The Gucci Icon Shoulder Bag ($1950) is an expensive dead ringer for Loeffler Randall's Norah Satchel. Since the shape and detailing are almost exact, the more affordable LR version would be the obvious pick here. Another copycat design is the the Pelham Tote ($1450). This design is similar in style and shape to the popular Bulgari Dalia, but is actually less expensive than the Bulgari bag. If the overall style of the Bulgari Dalia appeals to you, then the Gucci Pelham Tote is a more affordable option indeed. However, subtle differences between the two (leather texture, stitching, decorative accents) put the 'Dalia' way ahead of the 'Pelham' in my book, hefty price tag and all.

Jimmy Choo Bardia Hobo

I'm in serious handbag heaven today. New fall handbags are popping up all over the web, and I'm making my list of favorites as we speak. Some of my personal favorites are coming from Jimmy Choo in the form of the Blythe Satchel and Odette Tote, both of which I reviewed last week. Just when I thought things couldn't possibly get any better, they did. The hobo version of the Blythe Satchel is my new obsession. I really mean obsession as I can't stop talking about it, thinking about it or day-dreaming about.

All the fabulous 80's punk-inspired detailing of the 'Blythe' can also be found on the Jimmy Choo Bardia Hobo. What I love about the 'Bardia' is the fact that the hobo silhouette shows off the aforementioned detailing off in a more youthful, care-free way. I thought the Blythe Satchel was fabulous, but a bit too "stuffy" for the younger set. The 'Bardia' is a wonderful compromise for those of you that liked the 'Blythe's' look but not its shape. It's a roomy bag (13 x 11 x 6) so you won't be sacrificing space for style. Unlike the 'Blythe', the Bardia Hobo has a zippered pocket on the front exterior ideal for storing keys or a cell-phone. By the way, the detachable leather logo strap makes a nifty key chain holder. Think of it as an accessory thrown in just to sweeten the deal (as if this fabulous bag needed it). If the textured leather versions of the 'Bardia' seem too safe, there's a crushed patent leather rendition (right) that's even more glam.

Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster Clutch

Ever since I first saw the Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster Clutch, I can't seem to get LL Cool J's "Momma Said Knock You Out" out of my head. I'm actually humming the song as I type this. It's definitely a "Ally McBeal" moment I'm having here, but enough about my mental state, ladies. Let's talk about this clutch. Imagine the possibilities of such a bag.

I can just picture Angelina Jolie clutching the 'Knuckle Duster' on the red carpet and then, suddenly, decking Ryan Seacrest with her rocker chic handheld bag as he hounds her about whatever her drama of the moment might be. Women everywhere should invest in this handy clutch as a weapon of self-defense while out at the clubs. What smarmy guy would ever consider approaching a woman with a crass opening line if he caught a glimpse of her packing one of these clutches. Priceless!

The patent leather version of this rounded box clutch (pictured) sports a slight olive green color and features a metal frame, clasp closure and, of course, a skull and crystal embellished knuckle handle. Call it kitschy, tacky, or whatever else you can think of, but the Knuckle Duster Clutch is one fierce little bag. I'm off to track down my LL Cool J CD and jam the rest of the day away...

Henry Beguelin Peonia Shopper

I'm receiving more and more requests to feature "logo-less" bags or bags that are not immediately identifiable. Your wishes are my commands, ladies. Here is one bag that'll keep you looking stylish while it keeps your friends guessing. The woven design of the Henry Beguelin Peonia Shopper is reminiscent of several other designer labels, but not obvious enough to lead to a certain conclusion. I love the purple leather exterior (perfect for fall), and the brown leather top handles give the 'Peonia' a more casual look that works well with the "shopper" theme. This is a definite contender for that chic, stylish day bag we all long to have, and, for many of you, it's an even better option because it's not covered in logos. There is a removable decorative pendant you can dispense with and give it to your daughter or other "tween" you know. I'm sure they'd love to hang it from a backpack or something like that.

Christian Louboutin Patent Leather Schoolita

A couple of months have not diminished my love for the Christian Louboutin Schoolita. In fact, the more I look at it as well as the latest CL designs, the more I'm impressed by the direction the shoe-making label has taken regarding its handbag line. I'm still holding out hope they'll decide to do the 'Schoolita' in python, but, for now, I'm thrilled to see this fierce oxblood patent leather version for fall. There's no need to enumerate the reasons why I love this design. That's already been done. Just use this opportunity to lust after such an exquisitely designed handbag, and, if the mood strikes and your budget allows, add one to your collection.

Celebrity Style: Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and the Louis Vuitton Kalahari Bag

I've written about celebrities and their handbags for over two years, and I can safely say I've developed a keen sense of identification my husband finds "creepy". In other words, I'm very good at ID'ing celebrity arm candy. I'm usually not surprised by which designer label a particular celebrity gravitates toward - until now. Ashlee Simpson-Wentz threw me for a loop when she was spotted with the Louis Vuitton Kalahari Bag. While Ashlee's older sis, Jessica, is a notorious LV collector, I was shocked to learn Ashlee favors the iconic French leather goods purveyor with equal fervor.

It's not like Ashlee went for the tried-n-true Mono Speedy or something of that nature. The girl jumped into the deep end of the pool and snatched up the trendy, somewhat tacky and insanely expensive Monogram Canvas Kalahari Bag. This particular design, part of LV's spring '09 collection, is the monogram canvas version of the bag used in Madonna's now infamous ad campaign for Louis Vuitton. Before I start receiving nasty e-mails from disgruntled LV lovers, let me state for the record that I love the Kalahari Bag. Its overall design is modern and stylish in a way that's quite refreshing for LV. My problem is not with the design, it's with Ashlee's particular version of it.

The Monogram Epices version (left) we've seen on celebrities like Beyoncé and Mischa Barton is far more appealing than Ashlee's monogram canvas rendition. Why does Marc Jacobs insist on subjecting every single one of his new designs to mono canvas? C'mon, Marc, stop catering to the core fan-base of the label (which aren't going anywhere) and try designing for those of us that like Louis Vuitton but don't necessarily love it. Honestly, only hard core LV collectors would shell out $3400 for a monogram canvas bag. I can't bring myself to spend more than $1K on any monogram canvas bag, and I probably never will.

The Monogram Epices leather PM version is nearly $5000 (yikes), but at least it's different enough to even merit such a ridiculous price tag. Ashlee's GM Kalahari measures 13 x 12 x 3.5 and features ethnic detailing that would certainly compliment the actress/singer's current boho chic style. It's a shame she chose the fug version of the 'Kalahari', though. If she was already willing to fork over big bucks for it, why not go all the way and get the more attractive option. Better luck next time, Ashlee.

Dunlin Lafayette Bag

Those of you who know about Dunlin handbags know this New York-based company founded by Ramana Goldstein and Shiho Nagashima is responsible for imbuing each of its bags with an innate sense of adaptability. Their practical and naturally expansive designs are the ideal companion for the urban dweller that requires much of her bags.

My favorite Dunlin design, the Lafayette Bag, is now available in several colors and finishes (including a croc-embossed leather version) that really dress up this mostly utilitarian bag. The medium 'Lafayette' (pictured) measures 14 x 12 x 6 and features a total of 6 exterior zippered pockets (3 on the front, 3 on the rear), two main zippered compartments and a unique exterior that expands or retracts according to its owner's demands. The dual shoulder straps boast a comfortable 8" drop and are equally adaptable to the bag's degree of fullness. The Lafayette Bag is an ultra-chic choice for anyone - from college students to city moms to working women on the go. Its functional design, various color options and appealing price point make it an attractive handbag choice for women who crave stylish bags without logos or hefty price tags.

Dunlin Lafayette Bag ranges from $780 - $850 and is available thru HampdenClothing.com

Prada Cervo Shine Hobo

If you want a worn-in-looking, roomy bag for the fall, you might be interested in the Prada Cervo Shine Hobo. Measuring 16.5 x 13 x 6, this velvety smooth deerskin leather hobo provides function and casual chic style for $1650. The camel brown color is perfect for fall, but is neutral enough to work year-round. It features two front buckled pockets as well as interior zip and snap pockets providing plenty of storage opotions. The rounded top handle is the design's only drawback, but it's a slight one and won't allow the bag to feel too heavy unless you're a true pack-rat like me in which case no handle on Earth will help ease the discomfort of overstuffing ;-) You can pre-order the Prada Cervo Shine Hobo via Saks.com.

Jimmy Choo Odette

When I previewed some of our favorite and not so favorite fall '09 designs a couple of months ago, the Jimmy Choo Odette landed on our list of no-nos. Not that the bag's overall design and silhouette were to blame. On the contrary, we loved the "Y"-shaped detailing and ring hardware accents that provided the 'Odette' with an urban vibe we'd come to expect from Jimmy Choo bags. It's comparable in size and shape to the Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel which makes it a comfortable day-bag option. Our gripe with the bag was in the materials or, rather, the combination of patterns and materials used on the preview piece. Zebra-print calf hair and electric blue, snake-embossed leather trim on the same bag? Ugghhh!!! Just pick one or the other, for goodness sake. Now that we've had the opportunity to see this black pebbled leather version of the 'Odette', we have nothing but admiration for the design. I can't wait to see it done in other colors and exotic skins, just not all on the same bag. I hope Jimmy Choo doesn't ruin a good thing even before it has the chance to make a "splash" on the fashion scene.

MARC by Marc Jacobs Salma Satchel

Those of you that are as much of MARC by Marc Jacobs handbag fans as I am will appreciate this new MARC design that dispenses with the dreaded "MARC" logo plate so many of you complain about and focuses on being simple and chic. The Salma Satchel is crafted from the same supple leather MARC bags are famous for. It measures 19 x 9 x 5 and features dual leather top handles with a 7" drop, a zippered top and logo-fabric lined interior with three patch pockets for additional storage. The bag is pretty much devoid of any hardware or decorative accents. The only attention to detail come in the form of an asymmetrical seam and gathered sides giving the 'Salma' modern touches that will in no way date the bag in the future. It's available in red and black, but I'm recommending the red version because every woman should have a red bag to spice up her wardrobe.

"24/7" Chic Look

What would you do if you were whisked away at a moment's notice to parts unknown with only the clothes on your back to accompany you on your journey? Of course, we're assuming the "parts unknown" would be somewhere fantastic like New York or Paris, and the person doing the "whisking away" is a significant other and not some psychopath kidnapper. Now that we've cleared that up, we can get back to the question at hand. Do you have a go-to look that would work anywhere, anytime, "24/7"? If the answer is yes, well, then, good for you. We should all have a foolproof outfit that works in any setting. On the other hand, if the answer is no, keep reading to find out how you can get your own "24/7" chic look.

My foolproof 24/7 look begins with the perfect dress. My requirements are simple. The dress must be sophisticated, easily dressed up or down and devoid of trendy design elements. The Prada Pleated Techno Dress features a jewel neckline, capped sleeves, belted waist and pleated detailing throughout the hip creating a timeless silhouette that flatters nearly every body type. You can dress it up with a pair of peep-toe heels or make it more casual and youthful with a pair of boots like the Stella McCartney Tall Stretch Boot. Finishing off this foolproof look is the chic and moderately-price Tano Fast Lane Shoulder Bag. This bronze leather slouchy bag has adjustable buckled leather straps and drawstring sides, and the overall look of the distressed leather gives the bag a chic, urban vibe that will keep the rest of the ensemble looking fresh and modern.

If my hubby ever calls me up and says, "Honey, leave the kids with my parents 'cause we're flying to NYC for the weekend", I know exactly what to throw on to look perfectly put-together "24/7".

Derek Lam Resort 2010 Collection: In Living Color

Photos via Style.com

I can say several things about Derek Lam's Resort 2010 collection. Let's begin with the obvious - it's quite the colorful grouping, isn't it? Ironically, my favorite outfit from the entire 16-look collection is the bow-accented, crop-legged, halter-top black jumpsuit. I make no apologies for loving black, ladies. Lam's resort bags continue in the direction begun by his Spring'09 collection. Gaze at the funky, hot-pink 'Elsa' clutch and imagine yourself aboard a caribbean cruise liner dancing underneath the stars with your S.O. all the while clutching this fab bag. You can tell I'm in need of a vacation ;-) All kidding and fantasies aside, Lam's resort collection is fun, flirty, colorful and on-point. Oh, the bags aren't too shabby either. In case you can't wait to own the Derek Lam Elsa Clutch (and who could blame you), pick up the black leather version for $790 via Shopbop.

Chloé Fall 2009 Preview

Chloé has created some fabulous bags lately. The Paraty and Sally Bags were instant hits, and the folks at Chloé now it. Both styles are back for the fall and better than ever. We can expect to see the Paraty in leather as well as the insanely popular and celeb-favorite python versions. Keep your eye out for the grey python Paraty pictured above. It's simply divine.

The Sally Shoulder Bag, available in colors like pink beige, cocoa brown and basic black, is equally worthy of praise. The small, black python version is our "must-have" pick for the fall. The 'Sally's' classic silhouette combined with an exotic python exterior and gold-tone hardware make for a timeless handbag investment. Other 'Sally' versions done in blue calfskin as well as gold karung reptile are equally appealing. Chloé continues to introduce new styles to their handbag line, and the latest batch look very promising. The 'Romane' (left), in particular, will be one to watch. Alexander McQueen Flapper Messenger Bag

I'm about to make a statement I know many of you will disagree with, but here it goes. I am not a fan of the Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag. I'm well aware the entire world seems to be head-over-heels in lust with this bag, but I find it's way too masculine and utilitarian-looking for my taste. Even if I look at the PS1 in an objective manner and exclude my preferences, I find it lacking in style and certainly not worth its $2000 price tag.

On the other hand, I'm totally smitten with the Alexander McQueen Flapper Messenger Bag. This design is similar in style to the PS1, but gives off a much more feminine vibe than the Proenza Schouler version. The 'Flapper' is more practical sporting three exterior pockets and a sturdier shoulder strap. I also like the fact that the fold-over top doesn't come all the way down the front of the bag, but remains just above the large buckled front pocket allowing the pocket to become the focal point of the design. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is the Alexander McQueen bag is a more stylish, clever execution of the messenger bag style than the Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag. Sorry if I'm ruffling any feathers out there, but I've got to tell it like I see it.

Celebrity Style: Julia Roberts Does Marni Fall '09

I've been keeping a close watch on the web scouting out sightings of my favorite picks from the Fall 2009 collections. Just yesterday I featured the Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel which is now available for pre-order through LUISAVIAROMA.COM. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon a photo of Julia Roberts in NYC last week carrying my absolute favorite, "must-have" bag for fall. Ms. Roberts was photographed with a Marni leather tote from Consuelo Castiglioni's fall '09 collection.

This upcoming crop of bags from Marni are sheer perfection. They're modern, retro, bold and sophisticated all at once. How Castiglioni managed to achieve this harmonious union to create such a constrained and refined handbag collection is a testament to her artistic genius.Julia is carrying a taupe version of the white/black tote I featured last month. We can expect to see the tote as well as a similar satchel, tobo (part tote/part hobo) and clutch in white, black, taupe, grey and blue. The contrast piping used throughout the design isn't merely for decorative purposes. It serves to accent the retro, geometric designs in a subtle and elegant manner.

The neutral color palette will integrate nicely into any wardrobe and work well throughout the entire year. I don't have pricing information yet, but I'm working on it. I'll post an update as soon as I have more details. Julia is one lucky woman enjoying such career perks as getting her hands on a fabulous designer bag before the rest of us poor schleps can;-) Shop Marni's current on-line sale with most bags at least 40% off.

Botkier Rio Satchel

If the Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel is too much of a budget-buster, I have a moderately-priced alternative that's sure to capture your attention. Take a good, long look at the Botkier Rio Satchel. It's absolutely fabulous, and I must have it. You should have one too. Not only is the overall style of the 'Rio' an homage to "rocker chic", it's super functional to boot. Measuring 15 x 8.5 x 7, this yummy black leather satchel features no less than six exterior and three interior pockets. Wrap-around zippered gussets give the 'Rio' its edgy look while the subtle use of pleated detailing softens the urban feel of the bag. I am beyond in love with the Botkier Rio Satchel. I'm suffering from a full-blown case of handbag obsession that won't be cured until this chic satchel is safe within my loving and appreciate embrace. Ok, OK, I'll stop gushing because I'm nauseating even myself. Just get the 'Rio' because it's a chic, well-priced bag you'll be able to use year-round.

Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel

One of my favorite bags from the Fall/Winter 2009/10 preview I featured last month is now available for pre-order thru LUISAVIAROMA.COM. The Jimmy Choo Blythe Satchel is just shy of being over the top and that's what I love about it. The overall design is simply fearless in its quest to entice fashionistas. This larger version of the 'Blythe' measures 13.5 x 12 x 6.5 so it won't overwhelm a more petite frame. The black textured calfskin leather serves as the ideal backdrop for a slew of gold-tone buckle accents and stud detailing that tread a fine line between being gorgeous or looking gaudy. The details I find most interesting are not decorative, but, rather, formative. The structured shape, tailored top handles and dual zippered compartments are indicative of this chic satchel's functional qualities. Your bold handbag statement need not be for show only. The suede-lined compartments can store all your essentials in luxury while the unique turn-lock tab closure will keep them in place. If the Blythe Satchel calls out to you, responding to its siren call will set you back about $2360. That's pretty steep for a leather bag, but it's a statement piece priced this high due to style and design rather than the materials used to make it.

"Business or Pleasure" Cocktail Party Look

Whether it's for business or for pleasure, flaunt what your momma gave you (in a tasteful manner, of course). I know plenty of women that struggle with what to wear to a business-related cocktail party. They have a great little black dress and sky-high heels, but are afraid to look too "sexy" in front of superiors or colleagues. The trick is to find a look that will work in either setting, and this black trio from Neiman Marcus I've put together will certainly do the job.

Let's begin with the LBD. This Black Halo One Shoulder Dress cut a few inches above the knee is tasteful yet alluring. The one-shouldered dress is hot right now and can be flattering to small or larger busted women. The belted waist adds curves while the ruching around the waist provides a more forgiving silhouette.

Let's move on to my current obsession, the Prada Cutout Slingback Heels. What's not to love about this fabulous design? It has all my favorite detailing - peep-toe front, cutout sides, comfortable slingback style and platforms for added balance. Ever since I broke my ankles and my foot (repeatedly!) I need all the balance I can get. The black leather goes with everything, of course, so you'll get plenty of mileage out of them.

Now onto my piéce de résistance. The Dior Bow-Flap Shoulder Bag is a lady-like, roomy bag with a bit of an edge. I know what you're thinking, "Dior, e-d-g-y"? Well, in a word, yes. The fold-over flap shaped and detailed to resemble a bow gives the design a feminine touch while the textured lambskin leather and blingy silver hardware take it from simply demure to totally chic. When you put all three pieces together, you're left with a foolproof look that's fit for cocktails with the boss or drinks with your significant other.

MARC by Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock Tobo

The MARC by Marc Jacobs Totally Turnlock Tobo, part tote, part hobo, has been around for a few seasons, but I only just took notice of it after a friend of mine scooped it up at Nordstrom. She opted for the caramel brown version, but I happen to prefer the black one more. The 10" drop top handles are very comfortable, and the 16 x 12 x 6.5 size allows you to carry pretty much anything you might need inside without ending up with a bulky bag. The signature turnlocks can be found on the front tab and side pockets, and the interior features a zippered pocket as well as a couple of slit pockets for a cell-phone or PDA. I know I've mentioned how buttery soft the leather on these MARC bags can be, but you'll just have to put up with my gushing one more time. It truly is some of the best leather I've seen on a bag under $500. Period! My friend is in love with her bag, and thanked me over and over for steering her toward MARC by Marc Jacobs bags in the first place. This post would normally be found on Señora Cartera On A Budget, but its design and yummy leather compelled me to share it with my less frugal readers. You deserve a great bag for less too!

Louis Vuitton Monogram Iréne Bag

Attention Louis Vuitton lovers - prepare for the arrival of the Monogram Iréne Bag. I don't love monogram bags, but the 'Iréne's' overall design has me quite intrigued. At first glance, it looks like any other drawstring bag, but an aerial shot shows us that this bag is full of surprises. There's a zippered center compartment and two open ones flanking either side of it. To be honest, the drawstrings are really just for show although they can serve in a more functional capacity if you so desire it. The pleated monogram canvas exterior and top handles are crafted from the usual LV suspects. The use of metallic leather trim changes things up and compliments the monogram canvas well. The 'Iréne' also comes in a monogram-embossed suede leather with patent leather trim in rich fall colors like coco and espresso. I'd love to see this style done in something other than monogram, but I'm not holding my breath for that. Besides, at the prices Louis Vuitton is charging for the Monogram Iréne Tote, my love affair with the design would quickly fade away. What can I say, love can be a fickle friend.

Valentino Vertigo Satchel

Much like the Maison Tote, the Valentino Vertical Satchel relies heavily on pintuck pleating to achieve its desired look. I've always been a fan of the 'Maison', but the decorative stud accents used throughout the bag were a bit distracting and, frankly, unnecessary. The Vertigo Satchel, which dispenses with the studs altogether, focuses solely on using diagonal and vertical pintuck pleating resulting in a design that could very well induce "vertigo". It's not my intention to rag on the 'Vertigo', though. I happen to like it much more than I'm letting on, even with the pleating overload. It has many of the design elements I favor on a satchel shape- rich leather, a framed top and dual zippered closure. It measures 13.5 x 11 x 6.5 which is pretty adequate, but, believe it or not, I wish it were just a few inches larger all the way around. Then again, if it were larger it would probably be a tote. OK, let's forget about the size issue and move on to what's good and not so good about this design. My favorite aspect of this particular version of the Vertigo Satchel is the color - vavava voom RED! What better way to spice up a boring outfit than with a red bag? The only complaint I have about the 'Vertigo' is the $2000 price tag. I know we're talking Valentino, but that's a hefty price for leather. Other than that, the Vertical Satchel is a solid addition to the Valentino handbag family and get's our seal of approval (not that anyone at Valentino cares ;-).

Anya Hindmarch 'Dry Cleaning' Canvas Tote

As a mom-on-the-go, I often find myself carrying more than one bag around. There's my regular handbag, my children's diaper bag and that "extra" bag (usually a tote) where I keep a t-shirt, pair of shoes, water bottle and magazines. I like to store that bag in my car in preparation for the unexpected like an impromptu trip to the park with my sons or getting soaked during one of SoFL's infamous thunder storms while out running errands. My extra bag is not exactly stylish, so I'm definitely in the market for a new one. I ran across a collection of Anya Hindmarch canvas totes, each sporting a different printed scene and accompanying slogan, that might be exactly what I'm looking for.

My favorite is the Dry Cleaning Canvas Tote. Don't think for a moment this canvas tote is "cheap" just because it's priced under $100. The roomy 17 x 10 x 6 bag sports a sturdy pair of tan leather top handles looped through gold-tone, logo-accented square rings and features Anya Hindmarch's signature "bow" logo embroidered in grey thread. The grey-colored print of a vintage iron press accompanied by a matching "dry cleaning" slogan is so kitsch and perfect for anyone that needs an extra bag like me. I found my new "extra" bag plus I just remembered I need to pick up my dry cleaning. It's kismet!

Aridza Bross Annabell Shoulder Bag

There's a funky, urban quality to the Aridza Bross Annabell Shoulder Bag that I find really appealing. The shoulder straps extending down the front of the bag attaching to the bottom edge by clasps as well as the flap tab closure give the 'Annabell' a utilitarian look and feel that makes the design totally hip. The 'Annabell' comes in caramel brown, but this fabulous ecnre blue version is far superior in style and the only option I find worthy of the $595 price tag. The 'Annabell' measures a roomy 14 x 15 x 5 and features "antiqued" gold-tone hardware.
