Celebrity Style: Mischa Barton and the Dior Granville Handstitched Tote

While at a recent photo shoot for her upcoming TV show, The Beautiful Life, actress Mischa Barton look happier and healthier than she has in quite some time. I'm glad to see her getting back on her feet and dedicating herself to her work. Keeping busy is the best remedy for what ails a fragile spirit. I like her look at this photo shoot. It's hip and casual, but immediately dressed up by the Dior Granville Handstitched Tote she's toting.

Even Dior is jumping on the 'convertible bag' bandwagon. Great business strategy for them. Dior has a hardcore, older clientèle that will be happy with the intricate cannage detailing on the 'Granville'. Younger fashionistas that aren't Dior fans will love the versatile design, including the carrying options available as well as the well-appointed and roomy interior. NeimanMarcus.com has two colors available for pre-order: Mischa's black version and an exquisite grey one that is something to behold.

YSL Easy Y Studded Bag in Brown with Gold Studs

It was bound to happen. Every designer feels the need to take a perfectly good design and reinterpret it every way imaginable. It must be like an itch you just have to scratch. This time around the itch in question is the YSL Easy Y Studded Bag. We've seen it in black with gold studs and black with silver studs. Now YSL offers a chocolate brown version with gold studs. It's not awful in the way the Alexander Wang Denim Leather Coco Duffel was, but the brown/gold combination isn't exactly screaming "glam rock" to me. Regardless, this new version has its appeal. I don't have to like it, I just have to tell you about it. You can order it thru Brown's Fashion for $2432(USD).

Celebrity Style: Angelina Jolie and the Valextra Babila Bag

Angelina Jolie has morphed from 'sexy siren' to 'timeless beauty'. It's no surprise to me that Angelina now favors refined designer bags with very little, if any, detailing. Her latest choice is none other than the classic Valextra Babila Bag. If your personal style falls into the "modern classic" category, a Valextra bag is the only bag you'll ever need. Even with Angelina's two beautiful daughters accompanying her, my attention is instantly drawn to her bag (and, no, it's not because I write about bags).

Valextra's charm can be traced directly to the structured silhouettes, subtle detailing and amazing leather all their bags possess. The 'Babila' exemplifies expert craftsmanship, and its price point is reflective of the materials and work that went into making it. The small 'Babila' (Angelina's version) measures a comfortable 14 x 10.5 x 5.5 making it a great handbag option for almost any occasion. The larger travel size (14 x 15 x 4) has a more north-south orientation and can fit magazines or a slim book in case you're interested in using it as a carry-on bag. Not all of us are globe-trotting, humanitarian actresses like Angelina Jolie, but, for $2240, we can at least look like one.

Angelina's Valextra Babila Bag in pergamina white is available thru BarneysNY. They also carry the larger size for $2650 as well as both versions in several different colors. Luisaviaroma.com has the small 'Babila' in powder pink and black, both of which are priced at $2114.

Bottega Veneta Fall 2009 Handbag Collection: Schooling Others On Handbag Design

A Tomas Maier design oozes timeless sophistication from every stitch, button and zipper he so deftly puts in place. Under his artistic guidance, Bottega Veneta has risen to the highest echelons of the fashion world. Maier, BV's creative director, has wisely understood that it's the label's leather goods department which provides the foundation from which he and his design team can create such sublime articles of clothing.

Variation is not a quality associated with Bottega Veneta handbags except for a few new colors and slightly re-tooled version of already established classic designs we see from season to season. However, the Bottega Veneta Fall 2009 collection offers handbag lovers and non-Bottega Veneta fans several enticing options. Are these enough to bring new converts to the BV fold? ABSOLUTELY! From crocodile duffels to snakeskin satchels and lizard clutches, Maier truly embraces the subtle nuances of luxury and employs them on every single inch of these bags.

How can one improve on perfection? Maier does this with his use of pailletes, inverted pleating and appliqués. As a rule of thumb, adding stuff to a bag is not a good design choice, particularly when they already have such a busy intrecciato pattern like Bottega Veneta bags do. In spite all the possible negative consequences to such an endeavor, Maier pushes the envelope and opens up an entirely new world for BV handbag fans. The heavily-embellished clutch and top handle bag (pictured above) are collector's pieces worth every bit of what are sure to be expensive price tags.

    Alexander Wang Jess Shopper

Another day, another Alexander Wang bag. Fortunately, this bag is a thousand times better than the wretched Denim Leather Coco Duffel I featured yesterday. What I love best about the Jess Shopper is the slashed leather detailing over the entire exterior of the bag, including the handles. Don't worry about this being too weird a bag. Oh no, ladies, this bag is so chic it doesn't need a bit of hardware to give it style. The 'Jess' is fully lined so knick-knacks won't slip through the cracks, I mean, slits. I'm puzzled as to why this bag is labeled "small", though, because the thing is huge (measures 20 x 15 with a 9" drop). Does this mean there's a larger version that would require this labeling distinction. If so, it wouldn't be a shopper but more of a U-Haul. Forget about the size, at least Wang decided to do this bag in plain old leather instead of the denim-looking stuff I'm so sick of. I hope I haven't spoken too soon. Maybe I'll scour the web tomorrow and find the exact bag I'm dreading. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't.

    Celebrity Style: YSL Roady Hobo

Katy Perry photo: Celebutopia; Mary-Kate Olsen photo: JessicaStyle.com

So who do you think wore YSL's latest "must-have" bag best? Personally, I'm giving my vote to Mary-Kate because her outfit is more casual yet looks hip and dressed up by the YSL Roady Hobo. Katy's dress is so flirty and demure that the large black leather glam hobo clashes with her girly style. But who cares what these celebs look like, right? Let's get to talking about the bag.

This version of the YSL Roady (the plain red or black textured leather versions are now available for $1395 via Saks.com) sports a large hidden chain (ala Chanel) that serves as trimming along the edges.
The leather exterior is smooth and smooshy, and its large size makes it a great option for an everyday bag as Mary-Kate clearly demonstrates in her photo. The hidden chain 'Roady' will retail for $1950 (contact YSL Bal Harbour 305-868-4424 for more details), but I have to say that the textured leather versions I mentioned before are just as appealing. The simplicity of the 'Roady's' shape is what it's all about. It's best to allow the subtle details and incredible leather speak for themselves.

    Michael Kors Metallic Tote

I find myself longing for a simple, but, of course, never boring bag. The Michael Kors Metallic Tote is the perfect tonic to what ails my handbag-loving heart. It's a straight-forward tote done in a perfect shade of metallic gunmetal with simple silver-tone hardware and black leather braided top handles. This design would jazz up any casual fall outfit. The fact that this bag interprets the "metallics" trend in such a minimalistic manner will help keep it in heavy rotation year round. For $695, the Michael Kors Metallic Tote is not a bad cure for my handbags woes.

Alexander Wang Denim Leather Coco Duffel

Is it possible for a design to "jump the shark" before the season it was designed for has even begun? Just yesterday, I shared a rumor that the "it bag" of the moment, the Alexander Wang Coco Duffel, would be released with silver studs. I know I was excited to see the design with the more appropriate silver hardware, but I now realize that the silver studs were meant for this thing. The Coco Duffel has been subjected to the denim-looking leather Wang is so fond of. They've taken away the textured black leather that was so hot and replaced it with something that would look more at home in a flea market. Granted, the silver works better with the denim color than the gold studs would have, but that's not really saying much. Can you tell how much I dislike this version of the Coco Duffel? I sure hope they release a black leather (not denim-looking black leather) version with silver studs soon so it can erase the memory of this horrid bag from my mind.

    Bally Kenna Suede Hobo

Have you noticed how, slowly but surely, Bally handbags have become stylish and relevant? This forgotten label has been on my radar ever since they made the decision to hire Brian Atwood as their creative director. Not only is Brian as brilliant a shoe designer as Louboutin or Blahnick, he's also gorgeous (OK, that's not as important as his artistic sensibilities, but a girl can dream, right?). What can you expect from a man who had the great Gianni Versace as his mentor. Of course, "opulent" and "over-the-top" where qualities required of Versace shoes and bags when Atwood was in charge of the label's accessories division. It seems once Atwood launched his own line, he honed his skills and refined his designs to make them true works of art. The Chicago native has done the same for Bally, infusing this practically defunct label with the modern sophistication it so desperately needed.

Which brings me to Atwood's Fall 2009 collection which is nothing short of spectacular. Sumptuous leathers, lux exotics and trendy suedes comprise this ambitious handbag endeavor. Make no mistakes, ladies and gents, Brian means business with the level of craftsmanship employed in these hip and stylish designs. One of my absolute favorites is the Kenna Suede Hobo. Suede is wonderful to the touch, but not exactly designer friendly. To achieve the pleated look the 'Kenna' has is difficult with suede. The material must be treated to make it soft and flexible. No small task, indeed. Accents to this taupe-colored hobo are provided by way of strategically used gold-tone metal hardware and suede sashes that hang demurely along the sides. The wide suede strap has a roomy 9" drop, and the interior boasts several pockets for additional storage.

It's plain to see that Atwood intends to take Bally straight to the top of the fashion world, and with modern, casual designs like the Kenna Suede Hobo, I'm sure he'll have no trouble doing so.

P.S. - The gold python version of this hobo called the 'Kiki' (pictured) is stunning and will retail for just under $3700. If only I looked as fabulous as the timeless Christy Turlington who was chosen as Bally's Fall/Winter 2009 ad campaign model...

    Chloé Leather Bow-Embellished Clutch

Chloé is on fire with their impressive string of handbags. Thanks to the artistic talents of Hannah MacGibbon, the label's creative director, Chloé bags are, once again, chic to own. This Leather Bow-Embellished Clutch, for instance, is the perfect foil to a classic ensemble. Every detail on this bag is feminine and flirty. From its slightly curved shape to the diminutive pleats along the bottom corners, it is evident attention to detail is this clutch's strong suit. The design is trimmed with gold-tone piping, and spruced up with a large bow and ultra lux diamanté-embellished, bow-shaped broach.

Now let me share with you my absolute favorite aspect of this bag. Most of today's evening clutches are made from satin or exotic skins. This bag is crafted from leather. That makes all the difference to someone like me. If it had been a satin or expensive exotic clucth, I would only feel comfortable carrying it during the evening or to formal events. The leather exterior gives its owner more options. Even with the blinged-out bow embellishment, I wouldn't mind taking this along to a casual brunch just because it's leather. Plus, the divine dove grey color is enough to entice any woman into adding this Chloé design to her collection. The price for this clutch is $1095, which is steep for a small leather bag. However, it's actually not as small as it may appear. The measurements are 12 x 6 x 2 so you'll be able to fit all your "essentials" inside. You should also factor in the detailing and lovely leather on this bag when considering the price. I can't wait to see what else Chloé sends our way.

    Nancy Gonzalez Studded Python Tote

Please excuse me while I take this moment to faint straight away. The Nancy Gonzalez Studded Python Tote has my head swimming in a sea of exotic-skined goodness. I can't really elaborate too much about this design. It's perfect. That's all there is to it. Grey python is used on the front and rear panels while crocodile is placed on the sides and handles to allow for maximum comfort and flexibility. The python-covered studs are used up and down the front sides, and the results are breathtaking. A detachable strap as well as outer and inner pockets round out this incredibly well-appointed luxury bag. I've always had a "holy grail" of handbags I hope to get my hands on one day, but this Nancy Gonzalez design is coming in at a very close second. You can purchase it thru MyTheresa.com for a mere $4200 (including VAT, minus shipping) or €2.958,00. I'll have to get a tad creative with my personal handbag fund to swing this one. I'm off to crunch some numbers...

Jimmy Choo Ramona Studded Leather Bag: Trash Or Treasure?

I have mixed feelings about the Jimmy Choo Ramona Studded Leather Bag. To begin with, I love the 'Ramona'. It is by far one of my all-time favorite Jimmy Choo handbags, so I can't find fault with it in terms of overall design. This version attempts to interpret the 'rocker chic' trend that's all the rage this fall, but I can't help but feeling it falls short of what could've been quite a fabulous bag. The combination of black leather and gold studs should be nothing new to us, so why don't I like this bag? Are studs already boring me? I guess this brings me to what I don't like about the bag.

The fact they used studs on this bag is not the part I find puzzling. It's the decision to use them in a tiled, trinagle-shaped pattern that has me scratching my head. There is nothing triangular on this bag which might have explained this design choice. If you squint your eyes a bit, you could make the argument that the entire bag has a somewhat triangular silhouette, but that's not enough of a compelling reason to use these poor studs in such a manner. I can't get behind the uniformity of the pattern. Something more haphazard would've been far more appealing.

Disappointed is the best way to describe how I feel about the Jimmy Choo Ramona Studded Leather Bag. It also costs $3125, which is pretty outrageous for a design gone wrong. I'd love to hear what your thoughts are about this bag. Did they nail the 'rocker chic' trend, or did they miss the mark by a mile? Is the Ramona Studded Leather Bag trash or treasure?

Celebrity Style: Random Celebrity Handbag Sightings

    Photos: Celebutopia.com

I love it when the web is all abuzz with bags. Talk of dresses and scarves or ripped jeans and shoes just don't do it for me. A bag, however, will always grab my attention. I've fielded questions as to where to find these celebrity arm candy picks over the past week. In an effort to keep things concise, I decided to address them all in one post. So let's get down to business, shall we?

First up is the lovely and very pregnant Sarah Michelle Gellar. We just so happened to feature SMG last week on Señora Cartera On A Budget. She is definitely one of our favorite repeat visitors. This time around, Sarah is seen carrying one of her favorite pieces. This red Chanel Hidden Chain Flap Bag is a few seasons old and retailed for about $2650 at the time. You can never go wrong with Chanel. I don't think it's even a debatable point. If you're interested in Sarah's version, you'll find one up for grabs on eBay. I cannot vouch for the bag's authenticity because I'm not familiar with the seller, but you can certainly request additional information and photos to help determine that if you're interested. Of course, you can always contact your local Chanel boutique and ask if they happen to have any 'Hidden Chain' bags left in their inventory or if they'd be so kind as to inquire at other locations on your behalf.

Kristin Cavallari follows suit with her choice of this fall's "it bag" - the Alexander Wang Coco Duffel. What can I say about this one, ladies, that I haven't already said, repeatedly. It's a fab design and the entire handbag-loving world is drooling over it. While I'm still receiving inquiries as to where to locate this stunner, I've also heard from a few ladies that are having doubts about their purchase. My advice is if you get it and it doesn't meet your expectations, simply send it back. Don't sweat the small stuff, ladies. It's certainly disappointing to have your heart set on a bag only to be let down when it isn't as fabulous as you thought. The fact is some of you will get it and love it more than you do now, and some of you will take one look at it and want to chuck it in the trash.

If you're still interested in the Coco Duffel ($850) or want to know first-hand what all the hoopla is about, check out La Garçonne or Forward by Revolve Clothing. You can also visit Shopbop.com, Net-A-Porter and BarneysNY.com as they replenish their stock on a daily basis. Here's some important information about the Coco Duffel some of you might be happy about. Rumor has it Alexander Wang will be releasing the Coco with silver studs sometime later this year. I can just hear the "THUMP" of a thousand jaws hitting the floor at the mere thought of owning the Coco Duffel with silver studs.

Now I'll move onto more sublime handbag territory. I've received at least thirty e-mails asking me to identify Kelly Ripa's navy bag. Who knew Kelly would turn out to be such a sought-after fashionista. Kelly does a great job with her summer outfit and tops it off with Tod's Helmut Bag. This older version of the 'Helmut' (and by older I mean, like, a year old) is sophisticated and timeless. It compliments Kelly's outfit with as much ease as it would a pair of jeans and simple white tee. I haven't been successful in locating the navy version of this bag, but a tan one is on sale at Styledrops for $1289.

As we bring our random celebrity handbag sightings to a close, we come to none other than Kim Kardashian. I'll admit the handbag choice in her photo is a bit outside her usual style. The 'rocker chic', hobo style of the Alexander Wang Eniko Gunny Sack is not exactly what we've come to expect from Kim. She's more of a Fendi/YSL/Balenciaga kind of gal, but, heck, she's entitled to switch it up now and then. The Eniko is priced at $620 and sports the same textured leather as the Coco Duffel and zipper detailing as the Donna Hobo. It's actually quite spacious, so you'll be able to store your essentials with relative ease. The Eniko Gunny Sack is available thru Shopbop.com.

Hope your questions have been answered satisfactorily, ladies. Until next time...

YSL Easy Y Rock Zip Tote

This is fast becoming my favorite version of the YSL "Easy Y" bag. The main attraction here is the zipper-trimmed "Y" design. I thought the studded version we saw a couple of weeks ago was fabulous, but this idea is subtle, clever and more appealing to women that just can't see themselves embracing studded bags. I'm actually so enamored with the YSL Easy Y Rock Zip Tote that I can't see straight. I need it. I want it. I GOTTA HAVE IT. It'll cost me $1795, but I don't care. It's a gorgeous bag with just the right amount of 'rocker chic' charm. You can pre-order this lush black nappa leather version thru Neiman Marcus.

MARC by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Aidan Satchel

Isn't the MARC by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Aidan Satchel the perfect moderately-priced fall handbag? Granted, this is a rather large bag (18 x 12 x 9) that is better suited for strict daytime use. As a carry-all or work bag, it's ideal. The zippered top opens up to a roomy, well-appointed interior. There are a couple of carrying options available including a 10" drop detachable shoulder strap, and the exterior detailing is kept to a minimum with a few pleats comprising the main focal point of the bag. Even the logo tag can be easily removed in case you're tired of logos, but, in all honesty, MARC bags have become instantly recognizable because of their clean lines and incredibly supple leather skins. The Aidan satchel comes in three colors - black, wine, and faded aluminum (the former and latter are pictured above).

    Spotlight On.....Victoire Focx Handbags

One thing is for certain, if you ever see a Victoire Focx bag in action you'll never forget it. The Victoire Focx aesthetic combines rare, hand-painted exotic skins with rich leathers achieving an "old world" feel. The brand's intricate designs and skilled craftsmanship exemplify the epitome of luxury. For handbag lovers and fashion-forward women that long for the antithesis of mass produced bags, a Victoire Focx design is the ultimate "must-have" piece.

Constance Victory, Victoire Focx's creative director and designer, launched her first collection for the upcoming fall/winter 2009 season. Her exclusive bespoke line was featured at the White Show earlier this year at Milan Fashion Week. This talented and experienced woman has worked arduously as a stylist, including gigs for Alek Wek and Be&D, in order to finance her dream of creating a line of unique and luxurious handbags. Her experience in the fashion world gave Constance the drive and knowledge to engage in such an ambitious task, but it was traveling that provided the inspiration for her bags. Who says traveling is a frivolous endeavor!

Señora Cartera had the opportunity to ask Constance a few questions about her designs, and she was gracious enough to give us and our readers these insightful responses:

SC: With your experience within the fashion industry, what influenced your choice to create this unique handbag collection?

CV: I've always had a fascination with Renaissance architecture and architectural motifs that decorated their facades. I thought about how I could combine this aesthetic appreciation with my love for design. I chose handbags over clothing because it's one size fits all, and more flexibility (than clothing) for stylistic experimentation.

SC: Your handbags are unlike anything we've seen in the luxury handbag market. How did you arrive at the idea of merging intricate, "old world" - inspired designs with fine leathers and exotics?

CV: Honestly, I got the idea of using exotics while strolling down the blocks of NYC's West Village. I was pondering which textures and materials to use for the bags, and when I saw the cobble stones on the streets, I somehow thought about crocodile veins and using some of the pricey flanks to adorn bags; shattered glass on a pavement made me think of Swarovski crystals. I felt that Python complimented the interlocking snake motif seen on all the bags.

I wanted the marriage of the bag design and the materials to have the same, or similar, visual sensation as a jewel box. The stones mixed with the exotic skins and patchwork help to create a vintage feel to the bags.

SC: What sort of woman do you envision carrying one of your designs? Is 'Victoire Focx' only for the fashion-forward, wealthy fashionista or can a suburban soccer mom tote one of your bags as well?

CV: My target customer is the savvy, fashion forward consumer with an eccentric edge. She's comfortable and confident with her own aesthetic sensibilities. Whether she's the fashionista who owns an enviable collection of Birkin bags, or the soccer mom in Gary, Indiana, this woman appreciates strong craftsmanship paired with beautiful one of a kind design.

Price points place the brand in the luxury goods sector; bags retail from $1150-$2500.

SC: Will your design talents remain solely focused on handbags or might 'Victoire Focx' expand to include other accessories in the future?

CV: Currently, I am developing a line of belts and gloves. Boots and shoes are also in the works. I thought I'd be happy to just design bags, but once I started, I just couldn't stop!

SC: What advice would you offer other women contemplating a career in fashion?

CV: My advice to other women in fashion would be to study and learn the business side of this business--this includes, but is not limited to, marketing and merchandising. It's not enough to simply design beautiful things, or have really great taste. Spend time exploring the various career options that are available in this sector--if you'd like to design for your own line, spend some time doing internships in the PR sector so you learn how to promote and publicize a brand (of course this is in addition to the sales, marketing and other design interships that one should be doing). And do not underestimate the value of learning foreign launguages. Globalization is here to stay, and if you can speak multiple languages fluently, this becomes a great asset.

For less than what a Chanel 2.55 Flap Bag will run you, fashionistas can invest in a bag that is a true work of art and worthy of being handed down from mother to daughter. Visit the Victoire Focx website to browse the entire debut collection by Constance Victory or to contact them for additional ordering and pricing details.

A special thanks to Constance for her time in helping us compile information for this feature. Someone who signs her e-mails with the phrase "Bags & Kisses" has to be fun and fabulous.

I won't lie and say I'm a die-hard fan of DVF bags because I'm not. With the exception of the Wrap Bag, and only a few interpretations of it at that, I can't think of any DVF bag that would really warrant a second look. My lukewarm feelings for the iconic label's handbag collection is disappointing because I love their clothes. The handbags seem like an afterthought, not an integral part of their collections. The bags aren't part of a cohesive line, and therein lies the rub. When a bag is done to cash in on the designer bag craze and doesn't receive the attention it deserves, that really irks me. This DVF Marisa Draped Wrap Hobo is a great example of what's amiss with DVF accessories.

The draping along the front and rear of the Marisa Wrap Hobo is interesting, but not compelling enough to make me go out and buy it. Even the stud detailing on the shoulder straps appear to be mere add-ons as opposed to an important aspect of the overall design. I would've preferred varying sized and shaped studs interspersed along the entire exterior for a more 'rocker chic' look. DVF does this successfully on their Belle Clutch from the fall runway show (pictured), so achieving the look is possible. The 'Marisa' simply falls short of my expectations. It could've and should've been a much better bag. The fact that it's priced at $595 is its only saving grace. At least they were wise enough to not attach a ridiculous price tag to it.

Bottega Veneta Tornabuoni Maxi Veneta Hobo

Should I just leave this picture up and not write anything at all about the bag in it? Do I even need to describe the beauty and elegance of the Bottega Veneta Tornabuoni Maxi Veneta Hobo? The bag speaks for itself. All we can say about it are things like "WOW!", "stunning", "amazing", "divine" and "how much does it cost"? If you know BV, then you know this bag is expensive. I mean REALLY expensive to the tune of $3380. When I write about Bottega Veneta bags, I never seem to flinch at the prices. I suppose I'm already well-conditioned to expect them from the Italian fashion label.

Let's be honest here, Bottega Veneta is right up their in the 'handbag hierarchy' with Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermés. Their mastery of intricate detailing is unrivaled. The Tornabuoni Maxi exemplifies the amazing craftsmanship that goes into every singe BV bag. I love the handle on this particular design because it's not all woven, and helps to visually break up the monotony of the intrecciato. The burnt red color is striking and totally posh, and the suede-lined interior caps off the luxe features of the bag. You're getting a whole lotta bag for the price, ladies. It measures 10 x 22 x 1 (of course, that 1" inch depth is relative since the bag will clearly expand when it slouches as all hobos naturally do.

    Celine Dimitri Medium Python Hobo

Pinch me 'cause I've died and gone to heaven. Could there be anything more exquisite than sublime grey python on a gorgeous bag with silver hardware and fringe accents? If there is, I can't picture it at this moment. All I can imagine is the Celine Dimitri Medium Python Hobo perched a top my welcoming shoulder. When the great Phoebe Philo, Celine's new creative director, gave a "thumbs up" on this design, she was affirming what many in the fashion world already know - she is the cat's meow. This bag is all about opulance and sophistication with a modern flair and classic appeal. Even with the fringe detailing, the Dimitri Hobo would never look dated. Python, dated? I think not. The fact that the fringe is limited to the front side edges and are the same length as the bag makes all the difference. If the fringe had been hanging from the bottom or past the bottom edge, it would've killed the bag. Instead, the fringe works beautifully and shows the rest of the designer handbag world how to achieve perfection when interpreting trends. The interior is equally posh with a satin lining and suede trim. Plenty of small pockets are included to keep your knick-knacks in check. A gem-embellished fold-over strap closure adds the final touch to this stunning creation. Now brace yourselves, ladies. The price is just as stunning as the bag itself, if not more. The Celine Dimitri Medium Python Hobo will set you back $4200. What can I say, I love the bag and give it my stamp of approval in spite of its heart attack-inducing price tag. If you can afford this beauty (or have a defribulator handy), the Dimitri Pyton Hobo can be found at Net-A-Porter. It's currently out-of-stock, but bookmark the page and continue to check back to see when they'll replenish their inventory.

    Be&D Garbo Portfolio Shoulder Bag

How fabulous is this bag! For just under $1000, you can nab the Be&D Garbo Portfolio Shoulder Bag from the label that does stud embellishing better than any other. This amply-sized design measures 14 x 9 x 4 and features several interior and exterior pockets, a knotted shoulder strap and, of course, plenty of studs in varying sizes. Plus, the 'Garbo' is lined in suede (sigh!).

I love Be&D bags because the dynamic design duo behind these designs really gets how to pull off the potentially ridiculous 'rocker chic' trend. Whether it's the fully-studded 'Garbo' or the more femininely detailed 'Kan Kan', Be Inthavong and Steve Dumain are the "stud" gods. I bow down to their genius design talents.

Be sure to visit Be&D's website to check out their amazing selections for the fall. My personal fave - the Garbo Tote in tan lambskin. Oh, to have an extra $1500 floating around somewhere...

Handbag News: Luxury Goods Giant Hermés Is Still Recession-Proof

Move over Louis Vuitton. There's another iconic French luxury goods label posting a profit during these troubled financial times. Hermés reported a 12% rise in sales for the second quarter of 2009. Asia and the U.S. were the best performing geographical areas with Asia netting a 29.7% increase in sales. Ironically, European sales declined by 1.2%. Hmmmm.....

The Paris-based label cited a constant demand for leather goods, particularly their infamous handbags. The Birkin is a recession-proof beast. Was their any doubt about that?

    Lanvin Gloria Bag

Few bags embody the elegance and femininity of a by gone era as beautifully as the Lanvin Gloria Bag. The lines on this bag are simple and sophisticated, and the detailing is subtle and classic. The single top handle and turnlock closure imbue this design with a vintage vibe while the quilted leather exterior is nothing short of luxurious. I chose to showcase the 'Gloria' with this photo because seeing a bag on a model can sometimes help one make a decision about it. In case you're thinking this bag is too "boring" or lady-like, seeing it in action will surely dispel those fears. Hello, Lanvin hit pay dirt with this bag. It's perfect and well worth $2330 price tag. Yes, you read correctly, I'm saying this leather handbag is worth its expensive price tag. Why? Because it's timeless, and that's one of the most important qualities a designer bag can possibly hope to posses. Still not convinced, then take a peek inside the 'Gloria'. It's such a well-appointed design with its dual compartments and zippered pocket. It measures 13 x 11 x 4 - definitely not a wallflower of a bag. Hope this drives my point home, ladies. Inside and out, the Lanvin Gloria Bag is a classic that will be a part of your wardrobe for many years to come.

Celebrity Style: Reese Witherspoon and the "I Am Beyond...Blessed" Bag

Need a yoga gear carry-all? Pilates tote? Shopping bag? Reese Witherspoon apparently does and decided to let the world know how fortunate she is while carrying it. Reese is one of several celebs that have been spotted toting one of Beyond Yoga's "I Am Beyond..." Bags. The actress chose the word BLESSED for her canvas tote. Your word of choice is "graffitied" on a white canvas tote. You can choose one of the pre-designed bags (pictured here) or design one of your own like Tori Spelling did when she put her kids names on it.

The tote is priced at $65 and 30% of proceeds from the sale of the "I Am Beyond..." Bags go to The Art of Elysium, a non-profit organization that encourages working actors, musicians and artists to volunteer their time and talents to children battling serious medical conditions. I plan to buy one of these myself, but I can't decide what to write on it. How does "I Am Beyond...Obsessed With Purses" sound to you? I'm taking suggestions so please comment away.

Foley + Corinna Delancey Day Bag

I am never surprised by the ingenuity behind Foley + Corinna handbags. Like most of their designs, the Delancey Day Bag converts from one style to another with relative ease. This design can be used as a hobo, tote or travel bag by pulling a zipper or using a couple of clips. The seam detailing creates the illusion of different panels pieced together giving this bag some added structure. The zippered top handle is my favorite part of the bag. Want a sturdy hobo, just keep the handle zipped up. Need more ease getting in and out of the bag's interior, then leave the handle unzipped. The 'Delancey' is roomy measuring 13 x 15 x 6 with a 10" handle drop and detachable 17" shoulder strap, but, even with these large dimensions, it won't overwhelm a smaller frame. The trick will be to keep the amount of items inside the bag down to a respectable level. Sometimes a bag can look big on a petite woman through no fault of its own. If you overstuff a bag, you change how the bag was intended to look and feel. So be kind to your bags, ladies. Enough with the lecturing, right? Let's get back to the bag in question. The 'Delancey' is a chic yet practical bag with simple detailing and tons of style. For $450, you get a great bag without a hefty price tag attached to it.

Celebrity Style: Celebs ♥ Nina Ricci 'Ondine' Bags

Did you know Nina Ricci is going full steam ahead with a luxury designer handbag collection? Probably not. If you're a celebrity, however, you're more than acquainted with the once-again fashionable label and its latest accessories endeavor. In the past few weeks, celebs like Rihanna and Uma Thurman have been spotted carrying bags from the Nina Ricci Fall 2009 collection. The 'Ondine' line wasn't even available on-line until a couple of bags popped up on the BarneysNY website today. How quinccidental... (yeah, right!)

Rihanna is sporting the more dressy of the two selections on BarneysNY.com. The Ondine Pony Hair Bag ($2800) is a Chanel-esque shoulder bag with a braided leather/chain strap and pony hair exterior. The twisted leather trim and crown-like logo are interesting and well executed, but I have to say I'm not exactly feeling these Nina Ricci bags. Maybe its the ribbon detailing emanating from the logo or the entire logo itself. I can't quite place my finger on what irks me about them, but they do irk me. Their price tags are getting on my nerves too. Charging close to $3K for bags that are untested in terms of relevance and durability in the designer handbag market seems incredibly steep to me as I'm certain it will to most of you.

Uma Thurman went for the more relaxed messenger-style Ondine Besace Bag ($2750). This style has a more rounded shape than Rihanna's formal design and is crafted from calfskin leather. It has a 19" flat, leather shoulder strap with chain ends as well as added detailing in the form of raised seams on the front flap that mimic the logo itself. It's a better design than the pony hair bag, but will appeal less to Nina Ricci's core clientèle. I can see how Uma became a fan, but Rihanna? That's still confusing to me. I think she's confused as well. She can't decide between her Nina Ricci bag and her Alexander Wang Donna Hobo (yep, she's carrying that one in the pic as well). Now there's a fashion contradiction if I ever saw one.

I'm certain more bags from Nina Ricci's 'Ondine' collection will continue to make their way onto the web including sleeker evening bags and a rather posh looking hobo. Until then, ladies, you'll just have to make due with these two celeb favorites.

"Miami Social": Please Don't Watch This Insulting Show

I know this is a website devoted to fashion and, specifically, handbags. However, this is the only voice this Miamian has to speak out about, well, anything, so I'm going to use it now. After watching the first episode of Bravo TV's Miami Social, I was left dumbstruck and unimaginably embarrassed. If you happened to be one of the 650,000 that were unfortunate enough to watch MS, let me apologize to you on behalf of the real citizens of Miami because this "reality" program in no way, shape, or form represents us.

Let's start out with a few clarifications. Once and for all, South Beach is NOT Miami. Miami Beach, which includes the enclave known as SoBe, is a completely separate city from Miami. It's a tiny section of Miami Beach where there are plenty of hotels, shops and restaurants as well as the infamous night clubs and beaches. Another clarification, folks. I've never heard of any of the cast members of Miami Social with the exception of Katrina Campins who I remember from the first season of The Apprentice. These people are the ultimate movers and shakers here? Uh, no. Like I said, never heard of them and no one I know has ever heard of them.

Miami is just a regular city where most of us work day in and day out to pay our bills and support our families. The city has grown over the past 50 years thanks to a large influx of emigrants from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and countless other Latin American and Caribbean countries. When Maria, the blond photographer on MS, claims Miami is a tough city to raise a daughter in, I literally busted out laughing. Perhaps SoBe isn't an ideal setting for raising children (especially if their mother is out clubbing all night), but Miami is just fine, thank you very much.

To say that I and many Miamians are sick of being unfairly stereotyped is a gross understatement. We've gone from being portrayed as gun-toting, drug-smuggling criminals to being viewed as nothing more than vapid, plastic surgery-loving libertines. I, for one, am appalled this show is even on the air. All I can ask of any of you is to not watch this idiotic and insulting program. If you want to know what Miami and its people are really like, send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to relate a day in the life of yours truly.
