Miu Miu Large Woven Leather Tote

Who says Bottega Veneta is the only label capable of doing intrecciato-patterned bags? Miu Miu didn't think so, and this gorgeous tote is proof of their vision. The fact that Miu Miu bags are traditionally less expensive than their sister label counterparts is a huge plus, and, in this case, a quality intrecciato bag for under $2000 is almost a miracle. The Miu Miu Large Woven Leather Tote is priced at $1295, and you'll get a whole lot of bag for that reasonable amount.

The design itself is so appealing. The pintuck pleats on the exterior panels as well as the grey/black leather combination used in the intrecciato pattern are sophisticated touches. The spacious 18 x 13 x 6 size provides this design with plenty of practical storage making it a chic work bag option. What I find even more surprising than the successful woven pattern and elegant color duo is the fact that the use of an adjustable buckled drawstring, which I would normally detest, lends a certain flair to the overall design. While the top handles might be a tight fit over larger upper arms like mine, the sheer beauty of the bag compensates for the slight discomfort of carrying such a large bag on the crook of the arm. Handle marks are a small price to pay for such a fabulous bag.

If you're as big a fan of the Miu Miu Large Woven Leather Tote as I am, you can purchase it via Net-A-Porter as soon as it comes back in stock (yes, of course it's sold out!).

Botkier Angie Fringe Hobo

My initial thoughts about the Botkier Angie Fringe Hobo involved pulling off the fringe accents leaving this as a yummy chocolate-colored, croc-embossed hobo. Slowly (I mean sloooooowly), I began to warm up to the fringe. I realized it wasn't as hideous as I first thought it was. In fact, the fringe elevates the entire design from being just any other faux finished bag to a chic, trendy hobo.

What I like most about the way this design was executed is how, even with the fringe, the bag doesn't look "hippie" or "bohemian" in style as so many other fringe-accented bags do. The chain insets on the top handles and the croc-embossed leather certainly help achieve the polished look the 'Angie' possesses, but, in the end, it's the subtle nuances of handbag design that really pull this look off. The ruching on the front pocket, the slightly structured shape of the bag and the spacious, well-appointed interior all come together in a rather sophisticated manner.

I'm not surprised that Botkier is responsible for the Angie Fringe Hobo. This is one of the only labels that can actually do fringe and keep it from looking sloppy and cheap. Me likey this hobo very much. Kudos to Botkier for making fringe look so appealing.

MARC by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag

Why does the design team at MARC by Marc Jacobs continue to make their fabulous leather bags look completely ridiculous? I'm not appreciating this trend one bit. I think it's perfectly fine to play around with inexpensive fabric bags, but leather? No way. I was extremely disappointed with the Bombay Satchel and its nonsensical decorative padlock, but at least it was just a padlock. Now we're supposed to embrace a perfectly stylish and practical bag that's been dumbed down with the addition of two metallic birds. I'm sure we're all meant to believe this is a whimsical touch to an otherwise safe bag, but, c'mon, who's going to buy this?

The MARC by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag is priced at $498 which is fine for the sort of leather bags we've grown accustomed to seeing from the MARC line. However, I can't see anyone over the age of sixteen being into a bag that has a couple of birds slapped on it. You know the poor woman carrying this bag will get some crazy looks at the mall. It's a pity this was done to such a great bag. Other than the bird twins, this bag is absolutely perfect. It's roomy (15 x 11 x 5.5) and boasts plenty of storage space including front and rear exterior pockets. You can shorten the strap to make it a true shoulder bag or lengthen it to tote it crossbody style. Let's not forget about the gorgeous black leather on this bag. MARC designs have the softest, most durable leather I've ever come across on bags in this price point.

Just to drive my point home, I provided a photo illustration of what this bag would look like without the little chirpsters. It's somewhat plain looking I'll concede, but much more versatile to be certain. I can't recommend this bag to anyone who's reached adulthood, and I'm peeved to no end about it. They really screwed up what would have been a great, moderately-priced bag. In today's economic atmosphere, designers can't afford to jerk budget-conscious shoppers around.

You can pre-order the MARC by Marc Jacobs Petal to the Metal Sasha Shoulder Bag via Saks.com

Lockheart Holly Bag

Why do they insist on classifying this as a shoulder bag when it's clearly a hobo? Oh well, let's get to the nitty gritty in regards to the Lockheart Holly Bag. I'm a bit torn over this particular design. While I like the quilted leather/tonal stud detailing combination, I'm disappointed the designers felt the need to carry the studs onto the shoulder strap. It looks a bit weird and unnecessary. Speaking of the strap, I love the way it's weaved through the sides of the bag and finished with nice big knots. Lovely detail, indeed. Another complaint is the actual texture of the leather. It's quite grainy, don't you think? I would've preferred a smoother finish to better showcase the quilting and studs. Even with these small design flaws (at least they are in my opinion), the Lockheart Holly Bag is still a pretty stylish choice for fall. The gunmetal grey color is gorgeous and the bag's large 18 x 9 x 8 size will accommodate all your daily essentials plus anything else you can think of throwing in there. You can purchase the Lockheart Holly Bag for $575 via Saks.com.

Michele Inez Leather Hobo: An Inexpensive Alternative to the Hermés Massai

If I close my left eye, squint my right one and whistle Dancing Queen by Abba, I can almost picture the Michele Inez Leather Hobo looking quite like my "holy grail" of designer handbags, the Hermés Massai. For the past couple of years I've been longing for a 'Massai' and seeing Jennifer Aniston's Massai collection, including the gorgeous grey version she carried last year (pictured), only fanned the flames of my desire for this ultra sophisticated bag. Alas, I don't have $4000 to spend, so I suppose this hobo could do as an inexpensive substitite.

The 'Inez's' silhouette is similar, and its size is almost the same as that of the smaller PM Massai. The major differences between the two designs are, of course, the leather (duh!), the braided top handle and stud hardware, not to mention the zippered trim along the outside seam. I guess this is what the Massai would look like if Gaultier ever reinterpreted the design to reflect the current 'glam rock' trend. OMG, perish the thought. I was totally kidding, Jean-Paul. Don't you ever, and I mean ever, touch my lovely Massai. It's perfectly chic and sublime as it is.

I'm certainly not suggesting that this hobo is in any way a true substitute for the Massai. I just wanted to point out that for those of you that like the Hermés Massai but can't afford its hefty price tag, the Michele Inez Leather Hobo is a reasonably priced alternative and definitely more jazzed up than the Hermés version. However, you could just do what I'm doing and save for the one and only original. Good things come to those who wait, right?

By the way, Michele is a company known for its watches and other accessories and is based out of my hometown, Miami. It definitely is a small world.

Tod's Fall 2009 "Best Of The Best"

Tod's 2009 fall handbag collection is full new designs and re-vamped goodies. I've already featured the new re-styled D-Bag pictured here in grey with contrast stitching ($1345 for the piccola bauletto), but there are two other bags I'm equally excited about. Tod's Upper Tote Bag, which is already making the rounds on the set of Jessica Alba's new ensemble cast movie, Valentine's Day, is a sophisticated and refined statement piece crafted from supple and durable bison leather. The use of a metal frame top and chain/leather handle will certainly attract die-hard Tod's lovers as well as new fans. The black bison leather Upper Bag retails for $1925, but there are less expensive leather versions that will also be available.

I've purposely saved my personal pick for last. Tod's Girelli Tote Bag has undergone a substantial makeover and the results are fabulous. Derek Lam has demonstrated he can take a Tod's handbag staple and re-interpret it in a modern way while still remaining true to all that makes a Tod's bag appealing to its usual customer. The Girelli Tote sports its signature side turnlock buttons only larger, but the addition of wide, wrap-around handles as well as a detachable chain/leather shoulder strap make this a standout among the rest of Tod's fall collection. The pearl taupe version (pictured) is priced at $1495 which is quite reasonable for such a chic design.

Tod's 2009 fall handbag collection is the best I've seen from this label in years, and it's obvious Derek Lam's creative direction is responsible for all the visionary changes we're seeing. I've selected the "Best Of The Best", but, frankly, all the bags I saw were well-designed and very enticing. Tod's is definitely not just your granny's 'go-to' label any longer.

Handbag Dilemma: In Search of a Modern Classic Bag For Fall

I love it when our readers offer us a challenge:

Hi Dania,

There are so many bags to choose from for the fall that I just can't make up my mind. I've never been into trendy bags. My style is pretty laid back yet classic. I was hoping you could suggest some classic bags that aren't overly embellished. The simpler, the better. I prefer traditional colors, spacious bags and quality leathers. Any recommendations would be helpful. I need to narrow my search soon. Before I forget, my budget only allows for bags under $1000. Hope I'm not making this request too difficult.

Thanks a bunch,
Anita H.

Well, Anita, your request is actually quite easy to fulfill. If you're looking for stylish, modern classics with traditional colors, fabulous leathers, roomy interiors and an affordable price tag, you simply must get a Gerard Darel bag. Darel bags are celebrity favorites for good reason. They're understated, modern and functional bags crafted from the most incredible leathers imaginable. The fact that these bags are so inexplicably affordable makes them that much more coveted. I have many favorites among Gerard Darel's extensive bag collection, but two of my personal picks would make fantastic fall bag choices.

This bronze 24-hr Midday Midnight Tote is chic and practical. It measures 13 x 9 x 5 with a comfortable 11" handle drop and features Darel's signature antique gold hardware and front dual zippered pocket. The bronze color is on trend for fall with its slight metallic sheen and dark hue. It's not a basic color in the traditional sense, but it'll work well with practically any fall color you can think of.

My second pick is the 24-hr Saint-Germain Satchel in this divine shade of dove grey. Grey is the new white! Now you can add a splash of brightness to your fall wardrobe without worrying about the inherent pitfalls of toting a white bag. It's just as spacious as the tote measuring 15.5 x 9 x 5 with a shorter but still functional 8" handle drop. Either style will work well as a day bag so you can rest assured your money will be well spent with any decision you make. I could offer you other designers to choose from, but I'm convinced Gerard Darel provides the aesthetic you're looking for. In case I haven't proved my point sufficiently, their respective $705 and $498 price tags should make these bags even more attractive prospects. You can purchase either design on-line via Delcina.com.

Good luck, Anita. Happy shopping!

New Arrivals Alert: Marni Wave Tote in Grey

Be still my heart! I thought the egg shell white version of the Marni Wave Tote was stunning, but this grey one is a little piece of heaven. Not only is grey the must-have color for fall, it's also a great option year round and as versatile as black or brown. If you haven't decided on a bag for fall, the Marni Wave Tote in grey leather is your best choice for a modern classic bag. Available thru MyTheresa.com.

Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Hobo Bag

I'd made my mind up never to write about this hag bag. My dislike for it is so intense, I couldn't see myself writing an objective review. Even when I love or hate a bag, I can always provide factual reasons to back up my feelings. When it comes to the Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Hobo Bag, it's easy for me to forgo details and just call it ugly, horrid and trashy. See how simple that was for me? The words just poured out through my fingers. Even though I could leave my review at that, it wouldn't be much of a review, right?

Let's begin by zoning in on my main peeve with this bag. Simply put, the DVF Stephanie Hobo is E-N-O-R-M-O-U-S!!! No joke, ladies. It is probably one of the largest, most unflattering bags ever made. Most of my 'Stephanie' sightings were limited to petite women so my opinion of the bag was somewhat one-sided. I needed to see this bag on a tall woman. As it just so happens, I spotted the bag on last night's premier of Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami (yet another crappy show about Miami, I mean, South Beach, but that's another post). My favorite Kardashian, baby sister Khloe, was toting the DVF design, and, as you can see from this pic of Khloe, the bag is just as huge on her as it would be on her shorter sisters. Its large size combined with the metallic leather detailing makes the 'Stephanie' a big 'ole busy mess.

My advice to Khloe is to stick to Balenciaga, particularly her gorgeous green Work Bag, and ditch the DVF hobo for good. If a bag is large enough to fit your radio show co-host, it's best to look for a more suitable and complimentary design. So I'm sticking to my original short review of the Diane von Furstenberg Stephanie Hobo Bag - ugly, horrid and trashy.

Michael Kors 'Heidi' Collection

I would imagine it's an absolute honor to have a designer bag named after you. I know I'd give anything to have one named after me. Sometimes a designer's decision to name a particular bag or line of bags after someone comes from a sense of gratitude or inspiration. Jean-Louis Dumas named the Hermés Birkin after famed British actress, Jane Birkin, when she expressed her desire to have a sophisticated leather travel bag. Marc Jacobs named the iconic 'Stam' bag after fashion model and muse, Jessica Stam. Now Michael Kors bestows the honor on friend and fellow Project Runway co-star, Heidi Klum.

The Heidi Collection is comprised of simple yet chic shoulder bags, satchels and clutches all aimed at capturing the German model's beauty and sophistication. The common design thread running through this collection is the use of buckle detailing to gather folds of leather along the edges. The end results are sublime but never boring. As more of Kors' 'Heidi' collection sees the light of day, we as handbag lovers can appreciate how this fairly casual design can be transformed from classic to fabulous from color to color and finish to finish. You can choose from a simple black leather clutch or a jazzy metallic gunmetal version perfect for a night out on the town. Add a brass colored satchel to spruce up your fall wardrobe or opt for a more traditional espresso brown textured leather rendition you can use for many seasons to come. The appeal of Michael Kors' Heidi collection is the casual simplicity of its detailing and the inherent versatility of its design. I'm sure Heidi Klum is proud to have been the inspiration for such a collection as photos of her carrying her namesake bag demonstrate.

Louis Vuitton Monogram Vernis Alma MM

A fellow handbag lover recently brought something to my attention. Apparently, Señora Cartera hasn't featured many Louis Vuitton bags. In fact, less than 4% of all the posts on this site have been dedicated to King Louis. This is not a calculated slight on my part, ladies. I just like to spread the love (and sometimes hate) around to the entire designer handbag world. With that said, I'm keeping my word by bringing you news of a new color on an classic Louis Vuitton style.

The Monogram Vernis collection is one of my all-time favorite LV lines (besides the Epi Leather collection), and the Monogram Vernis Alma MM is a style every woman can find some use for. The 'Alma', one of LV's most recognizable designs, is a perfect foil for each season's new color additions. For fall, Louis Vuitton is bringing us this timeless design in a color called bleu nuit. This midnight blue is subtle, sophisticated, and works for either day or evening. You can purchase the Monogram Vernis Alma MM in bleu nuit thru Louis Vuitton's website for a rather steep $2010.

If you like the 'Alma' as much as I do, I'd also recommend the Epi Alma in black. It's an absolute classic bag you'll circulate within your wardrobe for years to come, and it's considerably less expensive at $1310. Too bad they didn't make an Epi Alma in bleu nuit. I would have nabbed that bag on the spot.

Dautore Leather Linking Strap Hobo

I've always admired Dautore bags for being completely out of the ordinary. Sometimes, I will concede, their designs can provoke some serious head-scratching, but even these less than stellar attempts are better than what some established labels are pedaling without shame. The Brazilian label's recent crop of bags signals a slight shift in the label's aesthetics. Their signature detailing is still ever present - supple leathers, slouchy shapes and minimal to no hardware. However, it seems Dautore has "softened" over time allowing for more mainstream designs. When I've received e-mails from readers asking about Dautore, they nearly always comment on how beautiful the bags are, but a bit too fashion forward for everyday use. The great thing about a bag like the Dautore Leather Linking Strap Hobo is its ability to appeal to a broader spectrum of handbag lovers while still remaining true to its label's design philosophy.

This casual hobo is a modern take on femininity. The softness of the bag's shape stands in sharp contrast to the intricate leather linked shoulder strap. The large 17 x 12 x 6 size keeps it from feeling dainty, and provides tons of practical storage space that makes it a fabulous choice for almost any occasion. The natural shade is a perfect foil for fall's darker color palette and ideal to use once spring comes around again. The bag is priced at $580 which is a steal for this modern classic. My compliments to Dautore for making such affordable, chic bags. Brazilians really do have a keen understanding and appreciation for handbag design.

Derek Lam Davina Hobo

Over the past year, Derek Lam has worked himself into a design groove both as Tod's creative director and as the head of his namesake label. The Davina Hobo, done in a greyish taupe suede, is a sophisticated yet wearable design. The details are modern and uncluttered. There's an asymmetrical front pocket that immediately draws the eye to it. Of course, this practical storage space is my favorite design detail on the 'Davina', but the bag has much more to offer. A tassel-pull side pocket offers even more convenience while the adjustable shoulder strap adds an element of comfort every woman can appreciate. The interior is spacious enough to use this as a work bag, and the understated antique gold hardware suits the overall design and color perfectly. Derek Lam is working his mojo with every new bag that comes out for the fall, and his focused efforts are what fashion forward women everywhere have been longing for. Plus, not a logo in sight. Heaven!

Celebrity Style: Rihanna Is Alexander Wang's Biggest Fan

Photos via Rihannanet.com and CelebrityStyleGuide.com

Rihanna never met an Alexander Wang bag she didn't like. It seems she owns every single design from the phenom designer. She's been photographed toting the black denim leather Donna Hobo, the Jess Slash Shopper, the mock croc Daphne Duffel and the blue denim leather Brenda Zip Bag. Interestingly absent is the Coco Duffel. Perhaps Rihanna doesn't like to carry "it bags". A wise choice for someone who takes fashion risks on a daily basis. On the other hand, the fact that she owns every other Wang bag does make her a bandwagon member by association. Some of these designs aren't my personal cup of tea, but I'll be the first one to admit they compliment her wardrobe perfectly. You can shop all of the Alexander Wang bags shown here thru Shopbop or Net-A-Porter.

Celebrity Style: Taylor Momsen and the Be&D Garbo Satchel

Confession time, ladies - I've never watched Gossip Girl. Perhaps it's the fact that I find myself annoyed by a program that shows 15 and 16 yr olds toting $2000 bags as if this were, like, no big deal. I'm also not interested in the lives of spoiled prep school kids who have the personality of a door knob (no offense to door knobs). Of course, in the end, I can't help but admire the wide array of arm candy on display during any given episode. The stylists on the show really do offer viewers everything from moderately-priced designer labels like Treesje, Kooba and L.A.M.B. to über expensive bags from Bottega Veneta, Chanel and Nancy Gonzalez. As much as I love to pour over photos from the set of Gossip Girl to see what bags the characters are carrying, I'm even more intrigued to know what the actresses themselves tote around on an average day.

Here we have the youngest cast member, Taylor Momsen, with the always chic Be&D Garbo Satchel. The dynamo designers responsible for Be&D's 'glam rock' designs made studs cool before every other designer caught on. The Garbo Satchel is the perfect choice for this 16 yr old actress. It's youthful and edgy, and doesn't make her look like a fashion victim. It measures 15 x 9 x 5.5 so it's as practical as it is stylish. Plus the leather on this bag is quite supple allowing it to slouch and settle nicely. Let's note that Taylor has enough attitude to pull this entire look off. She looks age appropriate and pretty fantastic in my opinion, but it's the 'Garbo' that really pulls this look together. I may not be a fan of her show, but I'm a definite fan of Momsen's downtown style and handbag taste.

Celebrity Style: Kelly Osbourne and the Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote

I admit this is a completely gratuitous post. Just another excuse to write about the Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote (can you tell how much I like this bag?). I've been scouring the web in search of a Faithful Tote sighting and got my wish courtesy of Ozzy Osbourne's rambunctious offspring, Kelly. The cute and petite aspiring singer was spotted out with friends carrying the McQueen design and, oddly enough, a squirt gun. This would normally be a ridiculous scene for a 24 yr-old to find herself in, but it's Kelly Osbourne so this is perfectly natural in her book. I love that she marches to the beat of her own drum, particularly regarding fashion choices. She mixes it up with punk-inspired clothing or goes totally glam in Chanel couture, but I digress.

The real reason behind my post is to show all of you what the Faithful Tote looks like on an actual person. If this were a smaller bag, I think it would look fabulous on Kelly. However, the poor girl is the size of a hobbit and this enormous tote looks somewhat disproportionate on her. On the other hand, I'm nearly 5'10" so I could definitely rock this baby. Buy Kelly's black leather bag for $2295 thru Net-A-Porter or splurge (and I mean SPLURGE) on the python version for a whopping $7860 via alexandermcqueen.com.

Alexander Wang Resort 2010 Preview

Photos: Style.com

Alexander Wang's Resort 2010 collection is cool, but, definitely, not dark. The clothes are in keeping with an "edgy Gap" vibe that's interesting, but not necessarily appealing to the base Wang's been designing for up until now. Would a downtown chick mind looking like she just stepped out of The Gap? Maybe not, but I think this collection will be a tough sell for Alexander Wang fans even if it is resort wear. But we're interested in the bags, right? I know I am. After Wang's incredibly successful, as-yet-to-be-fully-launched fall 2009 collection, I and much of the handbag loving world are eager to see what he's thought up next.

As you can see from these pics of his resort 2010 presentation, we have the same bags from the fall dressed down in cool tones. The Coco Duffle, Dorothy Shopper and Max Fanny Pack are all back, but with little to no improvement. I don't mind when a designer takes successful designs and brings them back season after season. That's just part of the game. When they look the same or worse than before, then we and the designer should be worried. Since this is a minor collection, I'll reserve my judgement until we see his spring 2010 collection in September. Hopefully, we'll see some new stuff worthy of inducing excitement. For now, I'll just take a snooze and dream of Gap-clad male models;-)

Marni Wave Clutch

It's no secret I'm an avid fan of Marni's latest handbag line. The Wave Clutch is exactly what jaded handbag lovers like me need to get enthusiastic about designer bags again. It's modern, elegant and a refreshing alternative to the rest of the clutches out there. The crisp, white calf-skin leather is a great option on a cold winter's day when paired with dark-colored clothes. It's roomy, but not unbearably large. Because the pleating is concentrated along the sides and bottom edges, the Wave Clutch is very forgiving when it comes to storing your essentials. It can fit a wallet, cell phone, keys and a small make-up bag comfortably. Heck, some regular bags aren't designed to do as much as this design is. In addition, the brushed gold-tone turnlock closure reveals a dual zippered top that's so convenient when you want to access only one side of the bag without fumbling through the entire interior.

On another note, I think it's appropriate to address a concern many of you have regarding white bags. Worrying about getting a white designer bag dirty is a legitimate and, until recently, forbidding concern, but times have changed. Don't limit your color choices in fear of ending up with a grubby bag. There are plenty of bag spas available to keep your bags looking and feeling as pristine as the day you bought them. I've used these services on several occasions and only have great things to say about how practical and life-saving they truly are. If you care to find out more about bag spas, read our post on handbag services for more details. Now put all hesitation aside, and get the Marni Wave Clutch.

Jimmy Choo Chandra Metallic Leather Clutch

I just had to share this bag with everyone. In fact, I had to share the entire look put together on the Net-A-Porter website as well. This is head-to-toe hotness. An Alexander McQueen blazer over a simple tank paired with this insane Balmain leather mini skirt and heels is capped off with the stunning and incredibly chic Jimmy Choo Chandra Metallic Leather Clutch. Hard-hitting yet ultra-sophisticated is the best way to describe this Jimmy Choo clutch. The pewter metallic leather is enhanced by one of the sickest chainmail embellishments I've ever seen on any design. It's a great size (13 x 6) and the closure, with its alternating silver and gunmetal chainmail cords, gathers the bag to one side giving the impression of an asymmetrical design. What can I say, ladies, this bag exudes style from every luxurious inch. It'll set you back $1500, but can you really say it isn't worth every cent? It'll make you look and feel like a million bucks, so $1500 is a small price to pay for feeling happy, sexy and fierce!

Valentino Petale Hobo

Not many women I've spoken to are fans of Valentino's Petale bags. "The detailing is too large for the bag" is the complaint I hear most often. I won't argue that point, I'll just say I happen to like the large "petale". Until now, that is. It looks fabulous on a tote and softens a framed bag, but on a hobo? Uh, ick! It kills me not to like the Valentino Petale Hobo. The bordeaux color of the bag is divine and perfect for fall, but this is one instance where the large leather petal is too overpowering for the design. Another thing, the petal detailing blends in with the shape almost to the point of becoming insignificant. The design is a contradiction in and of itself. I just can't embrace it. If they happen to release the Petale Tote in this rich color, I'll be in heaven. For now, I'm disappointed with this effort, but eager to see if Valentino can redeem themselves with a more cleverly executed design.

Alexander McQueen Python Faithful Tote

When I first brought you the Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote last month, I was instantly impressed by the way McQueen interpreted a trend in such a funky yet refined manner. An all black leather bag with multiple zipper accents sounds crazy to many women, but what if that same design were clad in python, not leather. Would that peak your curiosity? Would you give the Faithful Tote a second chance? The answer to those questions should be an unequivocal YES! Just look at this exotic-skinned pile of goodness. If I had about $8000 lying around, I'd buy this bag quicker than what an ice cream cone would last outside school doors (that, BTW, is a Cuban saying that looses some of its charm in translation, but you get the gist of it). The point is, I wouldn't hesitate adding it to my collection. The python exterior and edgy zippered detailing work together better than the leather version does. All fantasizing aside, I do think this bag is ridiculously priced, even for python. It will remain accessible only to the celebrities or the wealthy. I'll have to wait for a celeb sighting to get my Faithful Python Tote thrills.

Recession Shopping: Carlos Falchi Suede/Microfiber Tote

When all you require of a bag is that it be your own personal dumping ground, you don't exactly want to spend thousands of dollars for it. A stylish, spacious and practical designer bag can sometimes be the most difficult purchase to make. Good thing you can always count on Carlos Falchi Microfiber Totes to fit the bill. These simple totes have been around for quite some time, but this particular one, a suede/microfiber combination, is superb. The marriage of these two materials make the totes look and feel luxurious. And flexible!!! That's the key here. This bag can take punishment like nobody's business, and look fabulous all the while. It measures 17 x 16 x 4 with a 10" handle drop. What will you do with all that space? Anything your little heart desires. There's a convenient hidden magnetic closure and plenty of interior pockets to keep smaller items easily accessible. What's more, the tote also comes with a detachable pouch you can use as a clutch. It's available in two great fall colors - luggage brown and dark olive (my favorite). The best part of this bag is its affordable price - $220. I know, I know, you can thank me later for alerting you about this no-brainer, recession-friendly bag.

Celine Smoke Bag

This is turning out to be the day of Celine bags. It wasn't done on purpose, just a cosmic coincidence I suppose. What is no coincidence is how amazing Celine's Fall 2009 handbag collection is turning out to be. Phoebe Philo is certainly making a statement at the French fashion house. If I love Celine's Dimitri hobo and shoulder bags, then I am in utter awe of the Celine Smoke Bag. I can hardly find the words to express what an exquisite example of handbag design it is. Every single detail of the Smoke Bag is perfection. The doctor bag shape, framed top and chrome-accented luggage handles have a vintage vibe I find irresistible. However, it's the finely pebbled stone-grey leather and two front fold-over pleats that make this bag the epitome of modern elegance. You can take this bag out to a casual lunch with a simple tee and jeans (pictured) or use it to compliment a classic LBD when you're out for cocktails. The sky's the limit. The Smoke Bag is a bag you'll pull out everytime you want to look sophisticated without even trying. BTW, it comes with a detachable shoulder strap in case you hate to carry you bags by hand. Even if you don't scoop up this bag immediately (which you should), do add a grey bag to your wardrobe. It isn't just the color of the season, it's an excellent and attractive alternative to black.

Celine Dimitri Shoulder Bag

We featured the Celine Dimitri Python Hobo a couple of weeks ago, and now we're seeing the leather shoulder bag version of the bag on Net-A-Porter. This variation of the 'Dimitri' does not disappoint. As shoulder bags go, it's quite spacious (13 x 9 x 4 with a 23" strap drop). The rest of the detailing is in keeping with the hobo version - chrome-tone hardware, stone-embellished pushlock closure and wrap-around straps with a sort of staple-like detailing. The flat shoulder strap looks very comfortable, and the interior is lined in gold satin. The main differences between the two styles are the coloring, finishes, and, of course, fringe! It's tough for a basic black shoulder bag to compete with a divine grey python bag. Admittedly, the Dimitri Shoulder Bag doesn't pack the same punch as the python hobo, but it can still provide a chic and refined urban edge to any look. It's also more affordable than the $4200 python hobo. Buy the Celine Dimitri Shoulder Bag for $1600 here.

Coming Soon.....Chanel Coco Cocoon Handbag Line

Anyone that visits Señora Cartera's MySpace page knows how much I love Lily Allen since her songs have always dominated our playlist. I know I find her music inspiring in a very retro kinda way, but I'm not sure I understand why "the Kaiser" would find her inspiring. Anyhow, Lagerfeld does and so much so that he tapped the cheeky British songstress as the face of Chanel's upcoming handbag line, Coco Cocoon.

I previewed a few of the bags from this new line at the Chanel trunk show back in June, and I was surprised by how much I actually liked them. I mean, c'mon, lambskin and NYLON? Not exactly the words I cherish hearing in the same sentence, but the concept behind these designs is very practical and ultimately justifies the odd combination.

First things first, the bags are REVERSIBLE! I mean, literally, the SA pulled the bag inside out right before my very eyes and, voila!, a whole new bag. You're essentially getting two bags for the price of one. I know many Chanel die-hards will scoop these up quickly (there were already plenty of pre-orders on file for them).

I'm not certain if non-Chanel lovers will be as appreciative of these ingenious designs. We'll have to wait until October to find out if the hype converts to dollar signs (or euros) for the French fashion house. Beware, Karl, there are already replicas of the Coco Cocoon bags available on-line. Unreal!

P.S. - Love Lily Allen's homage to Audrey Hepburn's character from Breakfast at Tiffany's. The modern take on Holly Golightly is a perfect match for Lily's personality.

Alexander McQueen Ripper Clutch

Now this is a clutch! I was instantly drawn to the Alexander McQueen Ripper Clutch, and can you blame me? The design, materials and size make the 'Ripper' the perfect day to evening bag. Measuring 15 x 8.5 x 2.5, this oversize clutch with its framed top, brushed silver hardware and quilted black leather exterior is well thought out and impeccably executed. The turnlock closure and leather-covered rivets give the 'Ripper' a vintage vibe, and, frankly, I'm a bit surprised McQueen went with covered rivets instead of the more trendy metallic studs. Don't get me wrong, ladies, I'm ecstatic they decided on using the covered rivets. It lends the design an elegance that''' appeal to a broader range of styles. The large size will accommodate all your daily essentials and keep you going straight from work to dinner. Obviously, the oversize clutch is not an ideal choice for a formal evening out, but it can fit in well in almost any other situation. Now for the price. Even though the Ripper Clutch is an unexpectedly versatile bag, I just can't accept its $2780 price tag. With that said, if you can appreciate the 'Ripper's' design and the guaranteed mileage you're sure to get from it, then I'd say go for it because it's that fabulous a bag.
