The Best Bags of 2009

Deciding which designer bag was the best of the year is a difficult task. I start out by going through the year's archives and compiling a list of the best. Then I must analyze each design, taking several things into consideration when making my decision - design, price, impact and longevity. So, after careful thought, here is my list of "the Best Bags of 2009" (in no particular order).
  • Michael Kors Heidi Satchel  (gave Michael Kors bags some much needed credibility)
  • Fendi Peek-A-Boo Bag (showed the world that Fendi can still make fabulous bags)
  • Chloé Sally Shoulder Bag (a chain strap bag that wasn't a total Chanel rip-off)
  • Tod's Re-styled D Bag (demonstrated how tweaking can make a good design even better)
  • YSL Roady Hobo (simplicity and modern sophistication at its best)
  • Marc Jacobs Hillary Dome Bag (a large, feminine ruffled bag done the right way)
  • Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote (rocker chic for the masses)
  • YSL Easy Y Bag (what can I say, YSL is fabulous)
  • Alexander Wang Coco Duffel (much-hyped, must-have bag that is still going strong into 2010)

And the top honors go to..... the Chloé Paraty. The Paraty, a favorite among fashionistas and celebrities alike, saved Chloé from oblivion. After the departure of Phoebe Philo in 2006, the house of Chloé struggled to find its voice in the fashion world. Then Hannah MacGibbon, former Philo assistant and Chloé's current artistic director, decided to accept the job she had turned down a couple of years before, and, suddenly, things started looking up. In fact, Chloé is poised to be the designer handbag label of 2010 with new versions of the Paraty and new designs like the Marcie and Marlow. Congrats to Chloé, MacGibbon, and all of us. 2009 was great, but 2010 is shaping up to be even better.

On a side note, I wanted to qualify my pick of the AW Coco Duffel. I went back and forth as to whether or not this bag should make the list. I decided, in the end, to include it simply because it was the most talked about bag of the year despite all the complaints about its construction. Just because I may not agree with it making the list, does not mean it should be excluded.

Givenchy Spring 2010 Handbags: A Lesson in How to Ruin a Good Design

How do I begin to express my utter disappointment with the new versions of Givenchy's successful handbag designs for Spring 2010? I guess I could start off  by pointing out the less than appealing prints used on some of my favorite bags like the New Sacca and Melancholia. From a black and grey screen print on the once chic 'New Sacca' to the camouflage-like print on the 'Melancholia', Givenchy made their spring 2010 handbag collection a lesson in how to ruin perfectly good designs.

I believe designers are compelled to do this to their designs in an effort to keep their bags fresh and relevant. Instead, all they end up doing is making them really fugly. Just look at what they've done to the 'Nightingale' with those wretched studs. The poor things looks like it's crying. I'd be crying if I were that bag too. I included a photo of the camouflage Pandora bag even though I'm not a fan of the design to illustrate just how unsightly and EXPENSIVE these new serigraph bags are. I mean, c'mon, over $2500 for a bag with a horrible silhouette and hideous exterior? There are just so many other beautiful bags to expect for spring that these aren't even in contention.

I'm not completely opposed to the screen prints, though. In fact, there is a fabulous all-black serigraph 'Melancholia' (pictured) that I'm absolutely in love with. Can't wait for that one to hit the web. While I'm all for learning new things, this is one lesson all handbag lovers can live without. Cut the cooky prints out, Givenchy, and get back to making more stunning bags like the ones you've given us so far.

Show Some Holiday Love for Bagpoor.com

It's safe to say promoting ones "competition" isn't a task that ranks high on a blogger's to-do list, but Señora Cartera is not your average blog. While I enjoy seeing our readership increase month after month, I derive equal pleasure in seeing the same success for other deserving blogs. So, in keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, I'd like to take this opportunity to "give" my support to one of the freshest handbag blogs around - Bagpoor.com.

The very talented writers at Bagpoor, Nina Styles and Michael St. James, consistently bring fabulous bags at every price point to our attention. There aren't many bag blogs out there that I feel are deserving of attention, but Bagpoor.com is definitely at the top of my list. When another site can teach this avid designer handbag lover a thing or too, then that site should be duly recognized.

I'm asking all our readers to check out Bagpoor.com as a personal favor to yours truly. I want our "competition" to kick butt at the end of its first 6 months, and you can help make that happen. There are no strings attached with this request except making me and the folks at Bagpoor.com happy. If you like what you read there, leave them a comment to let them know. Trust me, bloggers love to receive comments, even the not-so-nice ones ;-)

CC Skye Kate Slouchy Bag

I love one-handle totes. They just seem to stay on your shoulder for a longer time than their two-handled counterparts. One of my current favorite one-handle totes is the CC Skye Kate Slouchy Bag. The details on this bag are trendy but classically executed. A woven top handle, folded corners and belted sides are appealing enough to catch ones attention without becoming too much to handle. The black leather exterior and contrasting gold-tone hardware give the design an air of sophistication. When I think of CC Skye bags, "sophisticated" is not the first word that comes to mind. This design, however, is deserving of that description. If you head over to shopbop.com, you can find the Kate Bag reduced from $595 to $416.50 - that's 30% off its regular price. Please note this bag measures a whopping 15 x 17 x 5.5. Petite ladies, beware!

Celebrity Style: New SATC2 Trailer

I won't offer too much of an introduction to the new Sex and the City 2 trailer except to say I correctly predicted over a month ago during a conversation with my hubby that the first SATC2 trailer would show Carrie Bradshaw clad in a white Halston dress (check) while Empire State of Mind played in the background (check). It's a fun, teasing trailer, but, ultimately, totally predictable. Given the fact that we've already seen tons of pics from the various sets over the course of three months, it's unlikely a trailer will offer us anything new.

These are a Few of My Favorite Things...

meet the natives u.s.a. and say yes to the dress reality television shows

As a reality TV junkie, I always find myself searching for that next great show about "real life". My current favorites are miles apart in terms of relevance and theme - Meet the Natives U.S.A. and Say Yes to the Dress! For those of you unfamiliar with either show, the former showcases five tribesmen from the island of Tanna who make their way across the U.S. visiting several host families and getting a taste of all things American. We ignorantly believe they'll find coming here an eye-opening learning experience, but it quickly becomes apparent that it is the host families and, in turn, the viewers who learn quite a bit about life from these amiable and wise men. If you haven't caught this show on cable, I suggest you hunt it down and watch it. It's one reality TV show well worth your time.

Señora Cartera's wedding photo
The latter program, Say Yes to the Dress, is a totally frivolous show that gives us a peek into the world of weddings, wedding dresses and the iconic NYC dress shop, Kleinfeld. Why do I love this program? Because I love anything that has to do with weddings. I've helped plan several throughout the years, and I enjoy the ins and outs of the industry. What I find to be the most riveting part of the show is the hard time that many women go through to find their dream wedding dress. I was fortunate enough to fall for the first dress at the one and only store I went dress shopping at. I asked the consultant to show me long sleeve, plain dresses for a formal evening wedding at a Catholic church. She said, "No way, dear. A long sleeve dress would do absolutely nothing for you. Try this on instead." I was in and out of the store (that includes trying on the dress, modeling it for my grandmother, putting down a deposit and drinking a nice cold soda while I waited to be measured) in less than an hour. Take that Kleinfeld!!! On a side note, wedding dress shopping in Miami is FABULOUS. I highly recommend coming here if you're looking for a wedding dress. I ended up with a one-of-a-kind design from Spain for $2000. A total bargain if you ask me.

So what do reality TV shows and designer handbags have in common? Nothing, of course. This is merely the first of several posts I plan to share with all of you over the next few weeks entitled "These are a Few of My Favorite Things...". By sharing with everyone what some of my favorite things are, my goal is for our readers to get to know who "Señora Cartera" really is. It goes without saying that my favorite "thing" is designer handbags, but there are plenty of other things that appeal to this handbag enthusiast. Hope you get a kick out of this series. I promise to have a few surprises along the way, and, perhaps, even share an embarrassing photo or two with everyone. If you care to comment, I'd love to hear your thoughts or even find out some of your favorite things as well.

Chloé Spring 2010 Handbag Preview

Top row (L-R): Large and small Elsie Bag; Large and small Paraty bag
Middle row (L-R): Large and small Marlow bag; Small and large Marcie bag
Bottom row (L-R): Elsie shoulder bags; Large Marcie bag and large and small Marcie hobo

I couldn't wait to share these gorgeous bags from Chloé's Spring 2010 collection with all of you. Let's just take a moment to give Chloé's fabulous creative director, Hannah MacGibbon, a round of cyber applause! This talented woman is totally on fire when it comes to designing handbags. There isn't a fugly bag in the bunch. How great is that. My personal favorites are the beige python Marcie hobo and grey python Paraty bag, but my tender and vulnerable heartstrings are being mercilessly tugged by the absolutely gorgeous ocean blue python Marlow bag. The inner workings of my brain are quickly formulating a financial plan by which that undoubtedly expensive bag can end up inside my closet. I hope you've enjoyed eyeing these bags as much as I have. How about sharing which ones are your favorites. I'd love to know what tickles your fancy.

P.S. - many of these designs are already available online as well as at Chloé boutiques, so there's no need to wait until March to get your hands on them.

Dita Von Teese's Handbag Style

I adore Dita Von Teese for many reasons, but mainly for being a modern women with unmistakable retro style. Dressing in this manner without coming off as being cartoon-ish is no easy task. Yet the "Queen of Burlesque" manages to did it with what appears to be little effort. Her outfits are always feminine and tailored, a throwback to the 40s and 50s, but her handbags are an entirely different story.

If one takes inventory of Von Teese's handbag collection, a definite pattern begins to emerge - that of a woman who loves to accent her looks with very interesting handbags. Yes, Dita loves classic bags from Chanel, Hermés and Dior, but she's just as capable of switching things up with statement bags like the Dior Samourai 1947 Woven Bag, Bodhi's Safety Pin Clutch or Alexander McQueen's Union Jack Skull Clutch (all pictured above). The great thing about Dita's style is that she wears fashion, it doesn't wear her. These potentially overpowering bags inexplicably blend in with her vintage-inspired outfits. Dita's polished style is an inspiration for someone as style-challenged as myself. I couldn't possibly pull off carrying any of the statement bags she owns, but I'd like to believe there is hope of doing so one day. If someone with such classic tastes as Dita Von Teese can do it, anything is possible.

Deal Of The Day: Chloé Paraty Tote

Although the Chloé Paraty Tote is not my favorite version of the hit design, I can still spot a fabulous deal on it when I see it. This blue leather Paraty tote, regularly priced at $1895, is now just half the price, $947.50, at Net-A-Porter. This is one of the best price reductions on a popular design I've ever seen. In fact, the bag sale section is filled with amazing reductions on some of the best bags of the season. I am seriously tempted by a few of them, but, seeing as I just bought another bag yesterday while out Christmas shopping, I'm at my limit for the month of December. Here's hoping some of you still have some cash available to scoop up the Chloé Paraty Tote at half the price.

Handbag Deals at Luxvie.com

This is not the first time I've recommended buying (or selling) through an online consignment shop, and it certainly won't be the last. The latest consignment boutique to come up on our radar is Luxvie.com. Dealing in gently-loved handbags and estate jewelry, Luxvie offers shoppers the opportunity to buy expensive designer handbags from labels like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and YSL at a discount.

While browsing the site, I noticed that, according to their rating system, some of the bags listed have never been used. The Louis Vuitton Monogram Vernis Reade PM in bronze (pictured) is brand new and priced at $600! This is just one example of the sort of deals you can expect to find at Luxvie.com. They also offer the chance to consign with them. I've sold many bags from my own collection through online consignment boutiques, and I can't rave enough about the experience. For people, like me, that can't stand to go the "eBay" route, online consignment shops like Luxvie.com are the way to go. Be sure to check them out soon. In our current economic environment, getting a great deal on a designer bag is just as good as finding a present under the Christmas tree (OK, well almost as good;-).

Alexander Wang Transparent Rocco Baby Duffle

Are you familiar with the phrase "jump the shark"? It refers to the point when something becomes absurd. If you happen to be a fan of the TV show Happy Days, you may remember the episode where "The Fonz" literally jumps over a shark while water skiing. The once hip and cool Fonzie became a joke when he performed such a ludicrous and impossible feat. Ever since that fateful television moment, people have used the phrase to refer to something that goes too far.

Now I'll ask you to look at the Alexander Wang Transparent Rocco Baby Duffle as an example of how a fashion designer can "jump the shark" as well. With only a few seasons under his belt and a hit handbag to catapult him into the fashion world stratosphere, Wang decided to take his most popular design and make a joke out of it. Transparent PVC? Seriously? I mean, seriously? C'mon. Who would buy a bag everyone can see inside of. Only women who work at beauty counters in Nordstrom or Macy's, but not anyone with an ounce of common sense. If transparent bags appeal to you (?), my advise would be to save your money and simply walk around with a giant post-it note detailing the contents of your bag on your back. I'm sure thieves will appreciate the gesture.

On a more serious note, it's time to talk price. Luisaviaroma.com has the Transparent Rocco Baby Duffle priced at $1190. I'm not certain if this price simply reflects the fact that this on-line store is based overseas or if, in fact, the bag actually costs this much. Even if it were priced at $850 as all the other 'Coco' and 'Rocco' bags are, that's still way too much for a bag made of 70% PVC. Don't fall for this see-through design, ladies. Just because Wang jumped the shark doesn't mean we need to jump along with him. Save you money and get something a tad more opaque ;-)

Pre-Fall 2010 Preview: Part 2

Chanel Pre-fall 2010 Paris-Shanghai Collection

I started the week off with the first part of my preview from the 2010 pre-fall collections. In the first installment of this preview, I mentioned Chanel's Asian-inspired runway show and showcased  a few looks from the collection. Now, in part 2 of my pre-fall preview, it's time to talk bags. I saw nothing in terms of new styles. Instead, Lagerfeld, Chanel's creative director, offered Chanel enthusiasts a ton of re-styled flap bags. We're all familiar with how much Karl loves pre-fall collections. This is his chance to really go nuts and try out new detailing on classic styles like he did in his 2009 Moscow-inspired pre-fall collection with the Kremlin Rooftop Classic Flap. The bags are done up in fabulous colors and detailing, but I'm not certain they're as special as the Paris-Moscow collection. I'll have to wait 'till the trunk show rolls around next year to make up my mind.

L-R: Michael Kors, Devi Kroell, Calvin Klein

L-R: Vera Wang, Burberry Prorsum, Pringle of Scotland

Here are a few more of my favorite looks from the rest of the collections. From red-carpet ready gowns to more practical everyday looks, pre-fall 2010 looks promising. We'll have to wait about 6 more months to get our hands on any of these designs. Have fun waiting!

Louis Vuitton Resort 2010 Monogram Bulles MM

I'm not sure there is anything nice I can say about Louis Vuitton's Monogram Bulles MM.  Well, OK, I can say one nice thing about it - it's a very roomy (15 x 16 x 6) hobo. There. Other than that, the entire bag is a waste. Let me list the reasons why:
  1. It's made from nylon
  2. It costs over $2000
  3. It has a nautical theme (let's get more original with cruise collections, folks)
  4. It costs over $2000 (I already mentioned that, but it's worth repeating)
  5. From the side, it looks like a life preserver (ugh!)
I know I'm skimping on this review, but do I really need to say more. It's another ridiculous attempt at slapping on the Louis Vuitton monogram pattern on anything they think someone will buy. I'm certain many women will buy this bag. The only silver lining here is that I know I won't be wasting my money on it. I'm feeling better already. Purchase the Louis Vuitton Monogram Bulles MM for $2020 via louisvuitton.com if you must, but I really hope you don't. Spending $2000 on a nylon bag with some rope and a tired logo pattern is beyond frivolous even for this designer handbag lover.

Versace Patent Leather Shopper

Look at this absolutely drool-worthy 2009 pre-fall shopper from Versace that's been reduced by 40%. Thank goodness for the price reduction because the original $3705 tag was ridiculous at best. Even at $2219, it's still a steep buy for patent leather, but the design is just too amazing and well-appointed to ignore. If you're a woman who doesn't shy away from color, this is the bag for you. It measures 13 x 11.5 x 7.5 with dual top handles and gold-tone hardware. Nordstrom's description of the Versace Patent Leather Shopper reads like this: "Liquid shine and vibrant color define a roomy patent leather shopper with a clean, mod-inspired aesthetic and wonderfully bold gold-tone hardware." I couldn't have said it better myself. It's hard for me to think of someone who wouldn't find this red bag appealing, even if the elevated price tag turned them off. The design, in my opinion, knows no boundaries when it comes to style or age. If I had the extra cash, I'd jump on this bag. It'll still look fabulous five years down the road. I put up a side view of the bag so you can all appreciate the amount of detailing on this bag. They really did a great job of striking the perfect balance between style and functionality.

Tod's Shade Tote

I've seen Tod's Shade Tote in orange, brown and cream, but this blue version has stolen my heart. The color is beyond amazing as is the bag itself. For $1095, you'll get a sturdy yet soft leather shopping bag with a roomy 16 x 11 x 8.5 interior, dual top handles (short 5" drop), hidden magnetic closure on the top as well as the sides that allow the bag to expand as needed. The bottom has metal feet so you don't have to worry about getting your bag all filthy and what not. The bag's silhouette is its' biggest asset - smart, sophisticated and modern but always with Tod's classic vibe. You can thank Derek Lam once again for another stellar design. The other colors I mentioned earlier are nice enough, but the blue version is a star!

Deal Of The Day: Salvatore Ferragamo New Icona Portatutto Tote

This Salvatore Ferragamo tote would make a fabulous Christmas gift for that special lady in your life (that includes you too!). Priced just shy of $800, the New Icona Portatutto Tote is crafted from calfskin leather with just a smidgen of silver hardware on the signature Ferragamo closure. It's pretty spacious measuring 13.5 x 10 x 5. Note that the handle drop is barely 5" long, so this is more of a handbag than a true tote. It's still a great buy if only for the yummy Italian leather and classic shape. Available in black (pictured), camel and coral via neimanmarcus.com.

Celebrity Style: Sarah Jessica Parker Loves Her Diane De Maria Bonnie Bag

In less than a week, Sarah Jessica Parker has made certain everyone with working eyeballs knows how much she loves her pink Diane De Maria Bonnie Bag. Whether it was promoting her new film with Hugh Grant or out running errands in NYC, Parker had her 'Bonnie' bag in tow. At a glance, the design doesn't look particularly unique, but a closer look reveals just how amazing it can be when art and handbag design come together.

Diane De Maria, granddaughter of famed french painter Pierre De Maria, uses her grandfather's iconic artwork as the background for her classic handbags. Her own experience as a painter as well as an appreciation for classic bags from her grandmother's heyday, gave rise to the Diane De Maria handbag collection. Sarah Jessica Parker is sporting a pink patent leather version of the 'Bonnie', a doctor bag silhouette that's been around long before any of us were even born. Notice how nicely Pierre's artwork blends into the design. No need to make it compete for attention with the bright color of the bag. The etched design is willing to wait until someone comes up close and realizes there's something more to the bag itself. In addition to the intriguing art, De Maria uses industrial-looking hardware to accentuate and modernize her classic bags.

I can understand why Parker found Diane De Maria's bags interesting. They're sophisticated, retro-looking yet modern and chic - all the things that make up SJP's personal style.  You can purchase De Maria's designs at Outlet 7 (646-602-2807) in NYC. Her bags will run you just around $1800 and come in several attractive colors. Browse De Maria's Fall/Winter 2009 collection here and here to get a true feeling for the beauty of her designs, particularly the etched artwork.

The Heart Is A Fickle Hunter: Angel Jackson Gold Snakeskin & Sequin Bag

As one who ponders and fashions pocketbooks for a living, I have a jaded and slightly fickle heart when it comes to bags. But something about this bag stole my heart. Have you gone mad? I'm sure that's what you're thinking. And I can see how this bag might be labeled flat out tacky. It certainly would be hipper in black, and it definitely comes in black. The silver version is more elegant than the gold...

Why this bag? From a distance it looks hammered and burnished--almost from another era. As you come closer it's strikingly right now, with every trendy detail: the sequins, the snakeskin, the studs, the gold. While the materials might be construed as slightly gaudy, the almost delicate way they are used is not. And then there's the bizarre contrast of the 70s hippy bag shape and twist lock. Something about this juxtaposition caught my eye and works for me.

Here are the gory deets: the Angel Jackson satchel style bag sells for $382 at the London website farfetch.com. Made of black leather and snakeskin with gold sequins on the front, back and a small front concealed pocket. The bag has gold fittings, a chain and leather detachable shoulder strap and a small twist-lock front fastening surrounded by cream contrasting snakeskin. It has silver stud details on the front and back of the bag.

I don't expect you to agree with me, but would love to know what you think either way!

Icon Jane Birkin Turns 63 Today

British actress, model, singer and activist Jane Birkin turns 63 today and I wanted to take a moment to honor her wonderful presence in the world. Most fashionistas are familiar with her daughters, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, and vaguely know that Hermes named the world's most famous handbag after their mother. This is the bag of waiting lists, Sex & the City storylines, and fairytales (I once saw Naomi Cambell on TV bragging about owning dozens). This is the bag every major celeb in the world carries and covets.

What I love about Jane Birkin's story is that her interesting and at times scandalous life helped define her mystique and lent a certain sexy je ne sais quoi, to the Birkin Bag.

First bursting onto the scene in 1966, playing a model in Blow-Up, Jane went on to work with Serge Gainsbourg, and the two soon became in item. When they released the duet "Je t'aime... moi non plus" ("I love you... nor do I") in 1969, the song caused a scandal for its sexual explicitness, and was banned by radio stations in Italy, Spain, and the UK. In 1975, she appeared in Gainsbourg's first film, Je t'aime... moi non plus, which created a stir for frank examination of sexual ambiguity. For this performance she was nominated for a Best Actress César Award. Garnering roles in many subsequent films, Jane also starred in two films directed by Jacques Doillon; as Anne in La fille prodigue in 1981 and as Alma in La pirate, which was nominated for a César Award in 1984. This was the year that Hermès named and designed the Birkin bag for her.

According to one story, the bag was designed for Jane after the company's chairman saw her struggling with several bags while boarding an airplane. Since then, Jane has kept up her cool, chic image as a singer and activist for immigrant welfare and AIDS issues.

Happy Birthday Jane Birkin!

Valentino Glamorous Tote

This Valentino tote is about as "glamorous" as having a root canal. In other words, it's the complete opposite of glamorous. A glamorous bag would have a timeless feel and sophisticated vibe to it. You know what I mean, right? A glamorous bag would look like the designs we were treated to when Mr. Garavani was still the creative director. Before he retired and his namesake label was taken over by talentless hacks. Before the dark times...

The Glamorous Tote, with its floral motif, various textures, appliques and embroidery, is the stuff that Valentino Garavani's nightmares are made of. It's actually quite sad to see what has happened to the once impeccable label. For $2800, you can own this hot mess of a bag or you could donate the money to a special fund in the hopes we can send the new designers at Valentino back to school. They really need a refresher course in design 101 - make certain your designs aren't ridiculously priced, style-less bombs.

Valentino Glamorous Tote available exclusively (well, thank goodness for that) at Net-A-Porter

Talk about three different bags from three completely different women. Style-wise, Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and Sienna Miller are miles apart from each other. While Jennifer and Reese share that comfortable mom-on-the-go look in common, Reese is more of a fashion risk taker, particularly after her split from ex-husband Ryan Phillipe. Then we have Sienna Miller who is pretty much all over the place. Let's see which bag styles these actresses prefer.

Of all three celebrities, Sienna's Marc Jacobs Robert Jennifer Shoulder Bag is the most interesting and yet, in my opinion, the most unappealing. The leather versions of this Marc Jacobs design run about  $2000, and they're not worth the price tag. The quilted leather exterior and chunky resin/chain shoulder strap are fun, but the pattern, even on the basic colors like her black version, is too busy. A monochromatic color scheme is a better choice when there are so many competing details on a bag. If you're interested in the Robert Jennifer Shoulder Bag, it's from Jacobs' Spring '09 collection and is currently on sale in a striking purple color at luisaviaroma.com  and a more toned down light brown via bluefly.com.

Reese Witherspoon's Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Clutch is an "urban chic" option that, when slung across the body and paired with a head-to-toe black outfit, is simply flawless. This is a great choice for any woman that wants the practicality of a shoulder bag and the trendiness of a clutch. It measures a comfortable 11 x 8 x 2 and comes in several colors. Reese's black version is available for $330 via The Trend Boutique.

Busy mom and actress Jennifer Garner is carrying one of my favorite designs from 2009 - the re-styled D Shopping Bag from Tod's. Thanks to designer Derek Lam's amazing eye for subtle detailing, the updated version Jennifer is carrying retains its timeless appeal while looking both classic and modern all at once. Jennifer's clay version is available at styledrops.com at the slightly inflated price of $1519. You can also check out a light brown version of the bag priced at $1156 at bluefly.com.

Marc Jacobs Fluo Tweed Clutch

When people ask me why I have such a "love/hate" thing going on with Marc Jacobs, I can simply show them a photo of his Fluo Tweed Clutch as an example of why. How is it possible the same talent responsible for producing the caliber of handbags we just saw for MARC's spring 2010 collection be capable of designing stuff like this? The mix of patent leather, tweed and gold-stained jewel-colored stones(?) is a visual atrocity. I swear it looks like something I made when I was 12 years old and held serious aspirations of becoming a handbag designer, and the end results of my attempt were far better than this bag. You can carry it as a shoulder bag or oversize clutch, but the best place for the Fluo Tweed Clutch is at the bottom of a trash can. Sorry, Marc. I can't let you get away with stuff like this when I know perfectly well you are capable of creating brilliant designs. So, on a serious note, stop pushing the envelope so much. Sometimes being over-the-top is a way of masking your insecurities, and you, sir, have no need to be insecure about your artistic abilities. I'm willing to overlook the content of your silly spring collection if you promise to behave come fall. I'll be watching you mijito!

Pre-Fall 2010 Preview: Part 1

There are times when pre-fall collections produce fabulous handbags. While next year's collections were filled with gorgeous frocks and functional work wear, my heart skipped a beat or two when I gazed upon this ultra-sophisticated design from Diane von Furstenberg. Yep, the very same designer I ragged on mercilessly  for a less than stellar spring 2010 collection is giving us what is sure to be a "must have" bag. When I wished DvF luck on her next collection, I had no idea she'd strike handbag gold. This design, similar to the YSL Majorelle, is a stylish option for both work and play. Notice how the modern top handles compliment the bag's vintage vibe beautifully. I'd dare say this is a chic, more youthful execution than the 'Majorelle'. If DvF can keep the cost on this one low enough, I'd bank on it being a major seller for her brand. I'm so happy she shifted gears from that spring line and focused on tailoring her accessories for a more urban clientele (no offense to the bohemians out there ;-)

Switching to apparel, I've selected some of my favorite looks from the collections. This divine Donna Karan dress is enough to get me to the gym while Oscar de la Renta's classic take on what boils down to an embroidered housecoat makes me appreciate the iconic designer now more than ever. My favorite look, by far, comes courtesy of Alexander Wang. I am beyond amazed with his modern work wear. The mixing of a shear white tunic and what amounts to half of a vest is inspired and fashion-forward. Love it to death!

And yet, there is no denying from browsing the pre-fall collections that Karl Lagerfeld remains king of fashion. His Asian-inspired collection is fierce, feminine and fantastic. Who'd figure Lagerfeld going for thigh-high boots? How very retro of him. The Kaiser is still the bomb. I just wish he'd shut his trap about women and their weight. He comes off as a jerk when he expresses his rather ignorant and prejudiced opinions on the subject.

I'm working on bringing you some additional looks and, of course, bags that are worthy of attention. Stay tuned for part 2 of my pre-fall 2010 preview.

MARC by Marc Jacobs Spring 2010 Handbag Preview

Doesn't spring 2010 look absolutely heavenly thanks to MARC by Marc Jacobs? If only Jacobs' high-end handbags were as appealing as these designs, he'd be golden. Oh, well. At least we have these confections to muse over. Just to think these bags will all be priced well under $1000 puts a smile on my face. MARC's turnlock bags get a new member to the club with the addition of a sleek messenger-style bag. The bowler is updated to look like a white, puffy cloud. It looks good enough to rest your head on or soft enough to snuggle up with. Then we have logo-less, twisted leather designs with the nuts and bead detailing introduced in the resort collection. The large white tote and purple shoulder bag have perforated front panels as well as new hardware on the shoulder straps. The tote is sure to find a home in my closet come March. How nice! Just in time for my 38th birthday. That will make four years in a row I gift myself with a MARC bag on my b-day. What a heavenly spring indeed.

Prehistoric-Inspired Giles Deacon Triceratops Bag

Giles Deacon, the British design phenom, began showing at Paris Fashion Week with his Spring 2010 collection, and it was quite a show. While some fashion editors referred to his collection as "whimsical", I prefer to use the term "wacky" as in "What's up with these wacky, tacky bags?". It seems quite a few editors are under the impression these "fun" designs have a place in the fashion world. I kid you not.
We're to believe these will be statement bags meant for the adventurous twenty-something that knows who she is and isn't afraid to show it to the world. Well, fashion editors of the world, unless these poor women behave like 7-year olds, I cannot imagine any of them actually walking around with one of these hanging off their shoulder.

Don't get me wrong, folks. I do think the Giles Deacon Triceratops Bag has a place in the world, just not in the fashion world. It should be on a shelf at Toys r Us or hanging on a rack at Claire's. Other than that, it's a pointless, ridiculous design. The fact that many believe these bags should be schlepped over to Japan where street wear can sometimes border on the childish, is insulting to the Japanese. Quit making stupid bags like this, Giles. You have way too much talent to indulge in such infantile designs. If you aren't too mad at me, though, I'd love to get my hands on one of your dino bags. I'll just rip the strap off and give it to my son. He LOVES dinosaurs;-)

Resort 2010 "Must-Have" Picks

I live in Miami where it's "resort" season year-round. You could say I have an eye for bags that look fabulous when on vacation. I'm fairly certain I see more tourists than natives on a daily basis. Of course, I always zero in on their bags to see which style women favor while they're "resorting".

For the most part, I see lots of color, but, mostly, I see tons of metallic bags. Perhaps it's Miami's famed nightlife that entices vacationers to go metallic with their handbags. Who knows. Whatever the reason behind this may be, I think it's a fantastic one. When you're on vacation, there's a sense of liberation that overcomes you. It makes it easier for you to wear a sundress, drink a fruity cocktail and sport a fun, metallic bag. In the spirit of all the fashionable Miami tourists and their fabulous metallic bags, here are my picks for 2010's "must-have" resort bags.

Let's tackle the most important bag you'll carry on vacation - the daytime tote. It needs to be both stylish and practical. It should be roomy and well-appointed, but never boring. It must be chic but never tacky. These are qualities you'll find in the Michael Kors Skorpios New Ring Tote. The gold leather exterior is just gorgeous to behold. The brown plaited leather ring-shaped top handles are perfect for arm carrying, and the detachable shoulder strap offers additional comfort for those moments when you're shopping and need to keep your hands free. The best part of the design is the spacious interior with its pockets and center zipped divider. You'll have plenty of storage options to house your cash, credit cards, traveler's checks and travel documents. I'm sure you can sneak a few knick knacks inside if you don't want anyone to know you're into buying tacky souvenirs.

Now that we've taken care of your day-time bag, it's time to find you a snazzy design for those hot nights. The Marc Jacobs Eugenie python-effect leather clutch is a piece of silver goodness. Your evenings will be filled with fun as this roomy clutch keeps you looking fabulous. There are pockets to store smaller items as well as a roomy main compartment you can use to store a wallet, hotel key and make up.

If you're fortunate enough to travel this resort season, I wish you happy travels filled with fond memories and fabulous bags.

The Near Future: White Now!

Candy Pratts Price at Vogue has already decided what are the most stimulating bags, shoes, and jewels for Spring 2010. I'm actually crazy enough to go through all 79 photos from her Spring 2010 Accessory Report (so that you don't have to). Just so you know, out of 79 picks, only four were bags. One is a purple + logo backpack/duffel thing and I won't be writing one more word about that. One is very lovely, but we'll save it for next week. Two of the four, interestingly were white. I know I'm asking a lot--it's a freezing cold Friday half way to Christmas, but I'd like you to consider a couple of white hot bags. Come on, nothing beats holiday shopping like a little spring window-shopping!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Gucci's white leather shoulder bag with metal embroidery is going to cause a frenzy. It's just rocker-chic enough to garner some celeb interest and yet it's got a classic shape that's wearable. I also think that the white tones down the hardcore vibe just enough to win over some ladies who lunch.

Also earning major stripes for making it on this coveted list is Dolce & Gabbana's Miss Sicily bag. I'm a sucker for it's streamlined classic shape that has 'lady-like' written all over it. And don't you love the two little coin purses updating it, as if to say this is no grandma bag. In the immortal words of SJP, me likey!

Celebrity Style: Sarah Jessica Parker The New Face of Halston?

Here's a peek at the new SATC2 movie poster. As I was reading my daily bookmarked websites, I came across this blinged-out poster for what is sure to be another fabulous SATC entry which is set for a Memorial weekend 2010 release. The poster showcases Sarah Jessica Parker clad in a bright white Halston Heritage dress with a pair of Louboutins on her feet and a stunning Chanel clutch in hand. We saw this outfit back in September when filming began in NYC, but just look what a little photoshopping can do. AMAZING!

Speaking of Halston, if reports circulating throughout the fashion world are to be taken seriously, SJP could be the new face of Halston's Spring 2010 Heritage collection campaign. I'm sure the offer is lucrative enough to appeal to the actress, and what great timing for the enbattled label to have its collection tied to the advertising extravaganza for the movie. I think SJP and Halston are a perfect match. She will certainly do Roy (Halston) proud.

Celebrity Style: Leighton Meester and the Proenza Schouler PS1 Bag

The only reason why I'm writing about this bag is that a very loyal reader (who requested to remain nameless) asked me to identify Leighton Meester's bag. For those of you that aren't acquainted with Proenza Schouler and the phenomenon that is the PS1 Bag, congratulations. I've had to put up with this bag all over the internet, in stores and on the street for some time now. Can you tell I don't like this bag? Is it really obvious? Well, if it isn't, I'll make it so. I can't stand this bag. Seriously dull and man-like in a bad way. I'll admit it looks OK on Leighton, but she's so adorable she'd make a bag of poo look fashionable.

So, to my loyal reader, here is your bag ID. I always aim to please my readers even when it makes me physically ill to do so. You can select from PS1 clutches and messenger-style bags like Leighton's at barneys.com. Prices range from just under $1000 for leather clutches to nearly $4500 for python versions. If you really want to indulge yourself, there's an insanely expensive croc version on Net-A-Porter. And this, folks, is the last time I'll be talking about this bag. My health can't afford to do it again;-)

P.S. - In case you're interested in finding out which messenger-style bag I prefer, click here to find out.

YSL Elephant-Embossed Easy Y Bag

UPDATE!

Apparently, I spoke to soon. This thing is now available at a reduced price (of course) on Bluefly.com. Let's keep our fingers crossed there are only limited quantities of the bag available so a handful of women need suffer the ugly fate of owning it.

I can just imagine the conversation that took place at YSL when they were discussing how to update their successful "Easy Y" design:

-So, ladies and gents, it's time to offer our faithful clientele newer versions of their favorite Easy Y Bag. What can we do?

-How about exotic finishes?

-That's a great idea. Exotic finishes are always in style and we can drive up the prices beyond our wildest dreams! What else can we do?

-We can do versions in bolder colors?

-Fantastic idea. Those bags will definitely appeal to our younger base. C'mon, guys, think. What else can we do to really spice up this design?

-I'VE GOT IT! Let's do an elephant-embossed interpretation.

-A what?!?!?!

-An elephant-embossed version. Can't you picture how incredibly fabulous this bag will look? We'll make sure it looks just like elephant's skin. And not the nice pebbly part. No way, that's not fun enough. We'll make it look like the skin of a dead elephant rotting at an elephant graveyard somewhere in the hot sun. You know what I mean, right? We'll go for that truly wretched, diseased look that's so on-trend right now. I'm sure Mark Jacobs or Alexander McQueen have done it already. Everyone will love it!!!

-OK, diseased elephant carcass Easy Y Bag it is!

Am I being totally facetious? Yes, I know I am, but can you really blame me? Look what they've done to the gorgeous and chic Easy Y Bag? It's a real travesty. Can't they leave well enough alone? Apparently not. Mercifully, I haven't come across this particular version on any U.S. or European websites. Hopefully no one will be tempted to get this thing just because it's a popular design.

Celebrity Style: Jessica Simpson and the Roberta di Camerino Blue Velvet Caravel Bag

So apparently Jessica Simpson is "officially dating" Smashing Pumpkins front man, Billy Corgan. Whatever. When I saw this pic of the new couple, it wasn't the fact that they were together that baffled me, it was seeing Jessica carrying a bag by famed designer Roberta di Camerino. Let's face it, Jessica is more of a Louis Vuitton gal. There's nothing wrong with that. She's been known to mix it up from time to time, but Roberta di Camerino? Who knew Ms. Simpson was even familiar with the iconic label or its equally famous designer? OK, maybe she doesn't know Roberta di Camerino from Roberta Flack. The point is that Jessica is slowly traveling out of her comfort zone and embracing more fashion-forward labels.

Now you're probably thinking to yourself "Roberta di Camerino is fashion-forward?". The answer is a resounding YES! In fact, di Camerino has been responsible for chic, envelope-pushing bags since the 50s. Jessica's blue velvet Caravel Bag, from the label's fall 2009 collection, is kitschy and refined all at once. Those results can only be achieved by the best designers like Roberta di Camerino. The aged designer was still going strong when her label was bought out. It seems the new creative director has seen fit to offer updated versions of RdC designs that remain respectful of their famous pasts.

Not only has Jessica Simpson found love once again, but her recent trip to Barneys also gave the singer a new designer bag. Here's hoping Jess appreciates the fine piece of vintage handbag design she's toting, and continues on her journey toward more fashion-forward arm candy.
