Jean Paul Gaultier took us from the jungles of Central America to a futuristic warrior realm in the span of a few minutes during his couture runway show this past week. I would normally not write about couture shows here because they aren't relevant to the handbag world, but even Paris designers can surprise us every so often with the inclusion of some truly spectacular handbag pieces.
The bags JPG featured during the ultra-thematic haute couture presentation deserve a few strokes of my keyboard. The "jungle bags", as I like to call them, were genius. The clutch and satchel made from "palm leaves" have an air of authenticity to them that a Caribbean girl like myself can appreciate. In addition, these designs are, dare I say this, functional.

Of course, I'm not suggesting you dress in head-to-toe jungle garb, but a beautiful fitted linen dress accompanied by any of these bags would make quite the statement. I could definitely see them working down here in Miami. We're nuts that way. I've seen more outrageous designs on South Beach, and, trust me, no one even flinches. We dig tropics-inspired fashion, and Gaultier certainly delivers that and more with these couture bags.
What do you think about JPG's "jungle bags"? Are they art or just tacky? Do tell!!!

4 Responses to "Spring 2010 Haute Couture Week: Jean Paul Gaultier"I like them and if he could somehow replicate the intricate weaving with leather, they'd be more practical. As far as the collection is concerned...I thought it was schizophrenic and tacky!
Brace yourself because I was told these are, in fact, made from leather! ITA about thew collection on a whole. One of the worst of couture week. Chanel was the best!
OMG! They're leather!?! Now I LOVE them!
