Handbag Style Of The Week: Henry Cuir Pas de Qui Tote

Henry Cuir has long been known for creating classic handbag styles with artistic touches and "bohemian" flair. This winning combination is exemplified beautifully in the Pas de Qui Tote. With a criss-cross design element taking center stage, this otherwise simple white leather tote measuring 14 x 19 x 6.5 becomes a stylish choice for both urban dwellers as well as suburbanites. I jusy love it when a handbag can appeal to such a wide range of women. That's what makes the Henry Cuir Pas de Qui Tote my choice for the handbag style of the week.

Available via Barneys NY for $1795

Celebrity Style: Random Celebrity Handbag Sightings

Celebrities appear to be favoring handbags that are a bit off the beaten track. This, of course, does not mean that style or luxury are sacrificed. In fact, the rich and famous desire bags that are both unique and exclusive, and designers are offering just that.

Jessica Simpson recently added a touch of glam to her impressive handbag collection. Was it a Fendi, Louis or Prada? Nope. It's a Sang A design. Sang A creates timeless pieces of handbag art by pairing modern silhouettes with gorgeous exotic skins and leathers. Jessica's Jade Clutch, which measures a generous 14 x 4.5, is crafted from shiny blue python and features a framed top with kiss-lock closure and satin-lined interior. It's a perfect evening bag, but the bright blue color can work just as well during the day. The Jade Clutch will cost you $1650 if you manage to get your hands on one. Contact Lux Couture to find out when they'll be re-stocking this particular design.

Let's move on with two distinctive handbags and their celebrity owners. New mom Sheryl Crow might be lugging around her son's essentials in a diaper bag, but she ditches the baby gear for a relaxed look while out on her own. Sheryl was spotted carrying the unique Puzzle Tote by Henry Cuir. This interesting design suits the singer's style very well. Completely handmade and hand-stitched, the 'Puzzle Tote' sports soft leather in a quilted pattern made to resemble puzzle pieces. A beaded closure and linen-lined interior complete this clever design. Sheryl's dark brown version is perfect for fall, but if you prefer your bags on the lighter side there is a honey-colored rendition that's equally striking. It's currently on sale for $995 via Barneys.

Another intriguing display of unique handbag design comes to us courtesy of actress Michelle Trachtenberg. This budding fashionista (she's come a long way from BTVS) is cultivating a style all her own. While many young starlets are courting new designers and their trendy creations, Michelle compliments her polished look with a handbag from a fashion icon. Her Gancio Celtico Shoulder Bag by Salvatore Ferragamo is the perfect handbag companion. Its' large size and multi-functional interior are modern features every busy celebrity (and regular gal) require. The rich, leather exterior with aged silver-tone hardware and contrast hexagonal-patterned top-stitching give this design a refined yet quirky look. The dual lace-thru round top handles are, by far, the bag's most pronounced design element which is just enough to keep the design fresh and inviting. No wonder Michelle picked it out. You too can have the Salvatore Ferragamo Gancio Celtico Shoulder Bag for $1550 via Saks Fifth Avenue.

Henry Cuir Alligator Eucalyptus Bag

The Henry Cuir Alligator Eucalyptus Bag is a perfect example of what happens when a great handbag design goes wrong. The concept of an alligator skin bag will send most women straight to handbag heaven, but this particular silhouette, measuring 15.5 x 12.5 x 6, is marred by distracting tonal leather-cord top stitching all over the dual shoulder straps, frame top and curved sides. The 'Eucalyptus' has great "bones" with its' decadent alligator skin exterior, adorable Amber closure and linen-lined interior, but is poorly executed. What a shame that a bag designed by the amazing Swiss-born Henri Beguelin, one of the most innovative handbag designers around, fails so terribly.

For $5500 via Barneys New York, the Alligator Eucalyptus Bag's price tag adds insult to injury. I just hate it when handbag designers don't know when to stop.
